    Recommend a good RTS game?

    Hi,

I am looking for a good RTS game but I'm a little out of the loop at the moment.
I have all the Dawn of War series and also Supreme Commander 2 but I want a new one.
Ideally I'd like one that's reasonably recent and not too expensive (not paying full price for Starcraft 2, had the demo and didn't think it was worth it).

Any suggestions to get me started would be appreciated. Thanks.

Empire total war is on Steam for £9.99.

The Empire and Napoleon double pack is £17.99 at Play.com too.

The original supreme commander, makes the second one look like a kiddies game.

If you wanna try something different I can't recommend Warzone 2100 enough especially since its free, if you have never played it before your in for a big treat.

Re: Recommend a good RTS game?

Homeworld 2 is a great game, the single player is fantastic also.
If you're going to get Supreme Commander, make sure you get the Forged Alliance expansion as it improves the game massively. Search for Supreme Commander Gold (Original and Forged Alliance expansion together). I cannot insist enough how much the expansion improves the game. Many many gameplay enhancements which make the game much more balanced than the original alone.

I'm still playing Forged Alliance after 3 years, and the online community is still a buzz with players.

Company of Heroes I didn't expect to enjoy, but for a LAN it was great fun when I tried it will a mate. It's all about zone control (each map is split into zones a la Battlefield series), the more you control the more resources you get. Very fun for short bursts.

Nothing beats Forged Alliance for epic scale, massive maps and versatile tactics. It's a proper thinking game where intel, surprise attacks, long game tactics (nukes, artillery, experimentals) or rushing tactics (massive swarms of lower tech units), or tactical strikes with missles can all win the game. Love it, love it, love it! And coming from Supreme Commander 2, it will feel like a sequel.

PS If you check the bargains forum it was available for £5 (Gold edition with FA expansion) only a week or two ago.

Re: Recommend a good RTS game?

I know a lot of people may dismiss this immediately, but I would still recommend Command And Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars, along with its expansion Kanes Wrath.

For me, this is a great online experience, with fast paced action, usually lasting under 30 minutes per game.... if you get to play someone of equal skill level to you the games can be very competitive...

I have played Starcraft 2 a lot lately, but have found myself going back to C&C3 more and more.

Of course Command And Conquer 4 should be avoided at all costs and it should never be named C&C4 as it is a disgrace to the famous series.

Re: Recommend a good RTS game?

The Total War series are great, not quite RTS but if you don't like the turn-based empire building stuff you can just fight the real-time battles.

I rather enjoyed R.U.S.E., which is fairly recent but seems to be less than a tenner on Amazon now. Puts a bit of a twist on the RTS with various options for deception.

I went back to SupCom FA at the weekend and y'know what? In some ways it's not as good as SupCom2 + DLC + Revamp Mod.. I have much love for both but as maligned as SupCom2 was it's a very different game with the stated configuration. Of course you've got to love SupCom FA for it's mods and maps nonetheless. The funny thing about the original (pre-FA) is that it wasn't really finished till FA came out - the interface was horrible. Arguably SupCom2's UI is better still. Swings and roundabouts but I'm thinking Chris Taylor's controversial decisions actually had some merit in some areas!

I know, I know, stone him! purge the unclean!

..but it is possible to like both, and even more so admit where one has the better implementation.

Go ahead an vomit now then. But I bet you've not actually tried the latest patched version, plus DLC + Revamp Much has changed!

Re: Recommend a good RTS game?

Wow - thanks for all the suggestions, wasn't expecting so many. I had no experience of the Supreme Commander games but the sequel was on sale one day so I gave it a go. May try the 1st one as suggested.
I do like the Empire building type games so Total War will be on my to do list.

I am a bit of a graphics whore at the moment as I recently just built my 1st gaming rig and I kinda want to use it to its full potential. I know the gameplay, interface and structure is much more important for RTS games but I would like a little polish to justify the cash spent
    Thanks again

$16.99 now on play for the Napoleon and Empire box set, Napoleon Total war is now £9.99 on play too.

Not sure if your catching the deals on Steam, but if you really like your stratergy then the paradox set might be woth a look. More games in there than you can play in a lifetime.

Damn thats a lot of games! May be a false economy though cos, as you said yourself, I will probably never get thru them all. Thanks for the tip though.

Will probably order from Play.com after the new year (no point ordering now as it could take 2 weeks to arrive).
