    The SEGA Master System...

Was my first proper console, save for a few random, dodgy Atari systems, so I've always had a soft spot for it.

It was, as you may know, superior to the NES, at least in terms of the hardware, and although the games never hit the same heights as, say, Super Mario Bros 3, it's still a classic system.

Recently I've been getting back into it, playing a few of the old games I've not played for decades, and even collecting them on eBay.

    So, any memories to share?

I've been playing probably the best (and best known) game on the system - Alex Kidd in Miracle World. Still a fine game even now, even if it seemed 3 hours long and really hard when I was 10, and now it's clearly 45 minutes long and quite easy.

Still, how many better 8bit platformers? None I'd say on a SEGA system, and only the Mario games from any system.

Shame the other offerings from Alex Kidd, Hi-Tech World (a bit slow and boring), Shinobi World (short) and the Lost Stars (terrible) never really hit the same heights.

The Sonic games as well are also good on the Master System, really enjoyed playing through the first one again.

Castle of Illusion is also still fun to this day.

I'll be playing some of the deeper games soon, like Golden Axe Warrior, and the most respected 8bit RPG - Phantasy Star.

Anyway, memories? Classics you liked back in the day? Who still has one? Any collectors?

    Re: The SEGA Master System...

I used to play Golden Axe on the arcade - it was a total classic!

Other than that, my only memories of a Sega MS is playing some Alex Kidd on it at a mates house - years 2 - 7 of my life were spent on the outer Hebrides so exposure to any kind of electronics was limited

I had a NES at the time though, some fantastic games for that.

I used to have a Master System II, lots of memories, especially with Alex the Kidd 2 I believe. I also had Rambo III with the laser gun if you can remember that. Road Rash was my fav though. In total I know I had about 15 games, but cant remember them all, I know I had a sonic game, i think it was the first one.

*Edit* i know I had another game, some guy with an Axe, vague memory.

    Re: The SEGA Master System...

I still have my Sega master system two. works great played it a few months ago.
Ive got sonic one and two. TO get speed on sonic one you have to just run. you cannot speed up by spinning up in a ball... so sometimes you have to go back to gain extra speed.
Alex kid in miracle world is a great game
Alex kid used to be sega's mascot before Sonic
my friend had a sega mega drive II but their cat chewed through the wires. sonic 2 for mega drive has got to be one of the best games ever!!! I have the sonic mega collection for gamecube and i love that game. back in the day playing it on the original machine was awesome!

I still have an Atari superbreak out was a great game. I don't think it worked last time I tried to play it.

I never got to play on an nes or snes
i went from sega master system two to the PS1 and played on my friends N64. i remember we used to argue which was better PS1 or N64
funny thing is later on I got an N64 lol.

    Re: The SEGA Master System...

Well this is all pretty random.

I could say things like 'there is no game called Alex Kidd 2', or even 'Alex Kidd was never officially the SEGA mascot' (although he was... just not really... but he was)

I wont though, I'll just say Sonic II on the Megadrive is a great game, as was Golden Axe in the arcades.

Nowt to do with the Master System though. Still, who cares, at least it's bringing back some retro gaming memories for all.

    Re: The SEGA Master System...

I guess Alex the Kidd could have been their mascot since that was an in-built game in the Master System II I had.

    Re: The SEGA Master System...

The mascot for SEGA was Opa-Opa from the Fantasy Zone games, and then Sonic.

Alex Kidd was never the mascot 'officially' although he pretty much was treated as such by everyone.

Miracle World was the built-in game on the Master System II I had.

Oh, it's 'Alex Kidd' not 'Alex the Kidd'.

I remember I used to have a great time playing Rampage with a friend.
Then there was Bubble Bobble, Miracle Warriors, Gauntlet and of course Alex Kidd.
I wouldn't mind giving Phantasy Star a go actually, I never got to play it.

    Re: The SEGA Master System...

    I too had the II

It was my first proper console also, and it was brilliant. I remeber Alex Kidd well, along with a James Bond game with Timothy Dalton on the cover. There was also a Sonic game that came built in, many an hour were spent on it, but I don't think I ever completed it.

Slightly OT, but does anyone ever remember getting quite scared when the 'OMG UR ABOUT TO DROWN' music came on in Sonic II?

Still got my Master System 1 - massive brick shaped thing it is. Sonic 2 on the MS is probably the hardest sonic game theres been by a long shot!

another was enduro racer, i only got it thinking it may have been like the arcade version i spent a fortune on as a kid.........good game but a bit of a let down.

one feature that was ahead of the competition was the card slot, i even had a couple of games on card. but for one reason or another it didn't take off - a bit like the gameboy/ds except they did work.

Yes! Forgot to mention the Dragons Trap in my post. Great game, like the rest of the Wonderboy series.
