    TF2 - whats going on?

Could someone please fill me in with whats going on with TF2 these days.

I stopped playing TF2 just as the first character updates started coming out last year. I have started playing a bit again now, but i'm pretty confused TBH. I have searched high and low, but cant find any simple up-to-date info and and what i have found seems contradictory. Exactly how do you get the upgrades? I was playing today, as scout, and suddenly i get informed that i now have a level 5 mini-gun for the heavy. Why? I thought it was achievement based, or is it not achievement based any more? And how can i find out more about the new weapons? Whats going on? I need a quick dummies guide to the new TF2!

I'm not sure i am completely happy with all this new stuff. It used to be simple and accessible - everyone on a level playing field. I cant be doing with hardcore online gaming that takes a lot of time and dedication, which is why i liked TF2.

It was achievement based but they have taken that out as its not "fair", from what i understand of the new update its basically random.

I would like to know who in their camp came to the decision that the original achievement orientated way was not "fair".

As far as Im concerned there isn't really another way to reward people, so changing this asked for trouble.

Problem is that the very skilled/experienced players that play a lot become very powerful, then there is a big power gap between them and the more casual players - which puts people, like myself who has a busy life now and can't play for 4+ hours every day. What was a game known and popular for being a very accessible game becomes a murder-the-noob-fest. When its no fun for new, or less hardcore players, it can seriously damage a games popularity and longevity. Fine for some games to have a hardcore of elite players, but the fact anyone could jump in and have just as much fun is what made TF2 so balanced and great IMO.

Not sure the new system is a huge amount better though.

The thing about the new system is it doesn't make you want to spend hours on weird and unfunachievement maps.

Seems that way. There are a couple that i really want though, such as the scouts ability is run past sentries etc without being hit. But after a few hours i just have a new L5 heavy gun, which i dont want and does not seem any real advantage over the old one anyway. I read somewhere that they plan a system where you can swap items with players.

TBH, it's all putting me off the game. I can't be bothered will all this crap, it's not an role play game at the end of the day. What they should do now IMO is just give everyone everything - thats what fair. The thing that should separate players is skill, simple as that.

Yup, now instead of playing on an achievement map all you have to do is idle on any server as the random drops are given out without you even playing.
Makes the whole achievement thing a bit pointless when its totally random like this.

The old unlocks should still work by hitting the milestones so you can play scout and do the achievements to get the bonk drink.

Is it possible to start your own password protected server, leave it running overnight and just sit in the middle of map and wait for the upgrades to be handed out?

    From their last blog post:

    * With our first four class updates we were tying the new weapons for each class to a set of achievements. Our intention was to make a set of achievements that eventually all players would get, and would be fun to get along the way. In some cases we did a good job at this (Scout), and in some cases we did a bad one (Medic). Across all of the class packs we were disappointed in the number of people that got to play with the new weapons, and feedback from the community was generally not favorable with this approach.
If you take a look at the achievement number pages, you can see what percentage of the playerbase reached the milestones and thus got access to new weapons/toys:

    Medic (out 13 months)
    Milestone 1 - 22.5%
    Milestone 2 - 18%
    Milestone 3 - 14.2%

    Pyro (out 11 months)
    Milestone 1 - 26.1%
    Milestone 2 - 23.3%
    Milestone 3 - 20.1%

    Heavy (out 9 months)
    Milestone 1 - 20.8%
    Milestone 2 - 17.2%
    Milestone 3 - 13.4%

    Scout
    (out 3 months)
    Milestone 1 - 11.2%
    Milestone 2 - 9.6%
    Milestone 3 - 7.7%

None of these numbers is even one third of the total playerbase, most times it's not even one quarter, even with the times some of the packs have been out, so a vast majority will never have even seen certain parts of the game. Is that "fair"?

I will concede the point that the new system - at least in its current state - may not be better, but the old way certainly has its problems. For example, there have been plenty of cases where achievements have been inconsistently awarded or are just outright bugged, which isn't exactly good for a system basing awards of new kit on the things.

Re: TF2 - whats going on?

I wonder what it would have been like if they simply had the random weapon pickups from the beginning instead of achievement milestones.
I still don't think they're doing it right, the random pick up just makes the game very "anti-goal" orientated.

I only have 2 of the new weapons, and I don't use them, and I play against people that do and I still manage to frag them most of the time.

They should have just given the weapons based on something a lot simpler like kill milestones, cause everyone SHOULD be able to reach a certain level, seeing as that's the aim of the game.

And yea Autopilot, they should just give everyone the weapons now.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well, i'm still enjoying the game very much..i'm pretty awful at it so any extra achievements or upgrades are quite a big deal for me...i can see both points of view though.

Re: TF2 - whats going on?

Well they added milestones for the spy and sniper achievements last night, and they require less achievements than the other class' ones do, so you can currently get all the alternate weapons via both the milestones and the random drop system.
