    New games in general

Is it just me or do all new game lack something?

just today i was getting tired off week long revision so i wanted to play something. But every time i picked up a new game its just a feeling off nahh.

I just thought the old transport tycoon game was awesome....nothing new been remade
the old NFS games such as the porche one...all the new street racing ones dont quite have the same ...
or the old (first 3) xcom games? they turned them in to something

so im wondering is it just me that thinks all new games lack something? think about it what was the last trully awesome game you played?

some off the new games are good, they just arent quite that appealing?

    am i the only one?

    Re: New games in general

No way - new games are better than ever.

Dawn of war II, Supreme Commander, Fallout 3, Plants vs Zombies, Puzzle Quest, Test Drive Unlimited, The Witcher.. I could go on and on. While it's easy to look back with rose-tinted spectacles, new games continue to inovate and wow me, and not neccessarily just with new graphics and technology, but in all of the above cases it's more gameplay.

    Re: New games in general

I would probably have to disagree with you on some points tbh. Having said that, I agree with you about NFS... Hot Pursuit 2 was a fantastic game on the PS2, but I can't be arsed with the street racing nonsense. What happened to taking a McLaren F1 round country tracks with narrow corners and clever shortcuts, whilst being chased by a helicopter and a Police Murcielago?

I've played a lot of games recently like Crysis, Test Drive Unlimited, Far Cry 2, Assassin's Creed, GTA IV, Oblivion, GRID, any football game, and come out with an underwhelming feeling of "hmmmm, was okay". I finished Oblivion with the odd cheat to speed up the storyline, finished Crysis to much disappointment, finished Assassin's Creed for the sake of the storyline while rigidly bored along the way, got very disappointed when I finished GTA IV without anything really happening, and can't be bothered to reinstall Far Cry 2 in order to carry on the game, such was the level of "meh" encountered.

I guess I judge games based primarily on how long for and how much I enjoyed them, although occasionally change that for some of the games I played a few years back that were below par, such as Total Club Manager 2004, but I just failed to realise it. Anyway, the reason I'm inclined to disagree is because there have been good games lately...

I realise that 'lately' might be a tricky definition, but I would probably list Portal, GTA:SA, Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction, Defense Grid, Battlefield 2, Call of Duty 2 and 4 as some of the best games that I've played recently. By no means a list of "good" games, just ones that semi-recently I've enjoyed, which as I said is the only yardstick I give much credence.

It's very easy to get nostalgic, but I think it's just a case of waiting for good games to be released. There's such a deluge of dross (in my opinion) that it's easy to become disappointed... just takes time for someone to come up with something good.

Kalniel, did you not also have the feeling that DoW II was missing something. DoW I, I loved the sheer size of the armies and the screen filled with carnage and DoW II gave you 4 units and the battles seem lack luster! The Hero's were over powered and you could clear a whole skirmish with only the hero...

As for Plants Vs Zombies, I couldn't agree more, more and more I am playing indie games and enjoying them more for the pick up and play for 10 minute blasts, this along with World of Goo

Actually I really prefered it over DoW I. I can't really put my finger on it, but the whole experience massively drew me in (in Single Player) - my screen is actually more full of carnage than it ever was with DoW1 - the firepower is much more overwhelming but the Tyranids also swarm you in much larger numbers than a single army ever did before as well. And I found the equipment/skills thing very addictive.

It might be because I'm not a huge fan of normal RTSen - DoW1 was enjoyable, but didn't stand out from the crowd for me. Supreme Commander was the first RTS I've loved in years, and DoWII doesn't even seem like an RTS, more like a sort of combined RTS/RPG/board game that fits my feel of the 40k universe much better.

I thought you were talking about old PC games, like mid-90s.

    Re: New games in general

I've been getting pretty bored with gaming recently. Looking at the E3 announcements, it's all the exact same stuff but with a slightly different story line. Nintendo in particular, NSMB Wii, SMB Galaxy 2, Donkey Kong 64 3 DSWii, etc.

The new IPs don't look particularly fascinating. All the FPSes are clones of each other, all the racers are clones of Need For Speed, just about the only other genres are Nintendo's franchises rehashed. Graphics don't seem to be advancing much. Lots of bloom and high contrast to try to hide the plastic look of everything.

And in my case back to desktop after 20 seconds if unlucky.

As I said, there are the odd few good games appearing, and I think it's always been the way. Some games are more about the marketing and the hype than the design, and then a few good ones will be released - perhaps with a lot of hype, perhaps without. The point I'm trying to make is that I don't think the rate has ever changed, it's just too easy to look back and forget all the bad things.

    Re: New games in general

Theres been a few games over the past few years that just make you think on those lines. Or you get to the end and think that something is missing or the last few levels were really short and rushed to push you onto the endgame.

I've started being really select with my purchases lately.

I can count on one hand the games that I actually intend to go out and buy when first released, everything else can wait till it comes down in price.

At the min really looking forward to Ghostbusters, Prototype, Batman Arkam, Mafia 2 and Assasins Creed 2 and thats really it. Everything else can wait until the price drops.

Another something I am waiting on is the expansion for Gears 2, it has a load of multiplayer stuff which i'm not interested in, but it does have a single player campaign also which takes you back into the the underground city with Dom to take out some Locust. Believe it is supposed to be out the end of July.

    Re: New games in general

I find newer games are trying to go over the top with massive everything like hollywood films. That's fine but they forget about actual fun gameplay and put stuff in that just looks good instead.
Gone are the days of a simple shooting game, indie games are alot more addictive.
