    Re: Retro Gaming

just put it in the normal gaming forum

(otherwise you have to determine the point at which something becomes retro...)
Post Counts and Other Rewards, Rules, Folding@Home, Fans: Push vs Pull vs Push-Pull, Corsair PSU OEMs.

    Re: Retro Gaming

    OK -

(but that's easily done - pre 128bit, pre 64bit etc, or by year/generation)

I guess this has been discussed already so I'll just post anything in the normal forum.

    Thanks,

    Re: Retro Gaming

Love the old retro stuff, beats a lot of todays games when it comes to replayability. Games were just so good even though they were quite linear!

    Re: Retro Gaming

I don't really agree that games were just generally better in the past - it's subjective - but surely a good game is a good game? I'm sure there was just as much crap back then

    Re: Retro Gaming

Actually, yeah in all fairness there was. But being a lot younger than I am now had less money to spend so literally just used to buy the ones I really wanted. I remember going to the software shop every saturday morning and buying the latest release for the C64 on tape for a mere tenner!

When something was crap back then, it was usually REALLY bad. Thing that got a lot of users during the 8bit era was poor sprite detection. Having a 1 inch invisible block round your character was the death of you on a fair few games!

Another thing that I found amusing at the time was when the 8bit Spectrum and C64 versions turned out superior games to their 16bit counterparts (Atari ST and Amiga). Granted this didn't happen often. One game that comes straight to mind was Bionic Commando on the Amiga and its C64 counterpart. On the C64 your commando stayed in the middle of the screen at all times so you could see what was going on around you, on the Amiga however, the screen moved when you got near the edge. This inadvertantly ended up killing you a lot of the time due to something moving towards you that you couldn't see yet. Don't get me wrong, visually the Amiga version was lovely in comparrison, but the C64 version just played so much better!

An all round good game though was Turrican on the systems, music and playability were great across the board.

    Re: Retro Gaming

Games on the whole were definitely harder back in the 'old days'..pixel perfect jumps, no save points etc etc)..it had a lot to do with the technology back then but much harder to complete..recent games seem to involve a lot of hand holding.
    I enjoy them both

Posts can't sing but how about bubble bobble on a banjo. Must admit I still play it and also got it on the DS and it's never off

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kg45Er7i9SU

    Other games I play are:

    Speedball
    Syndicate
    Robotron
    Space Invaders
Still play on the many master system/megadrive games

In fact the list is endless, I prefer the old school retro games.

    Re: Retro Gaming

I found out something new the other day. I don't know who if anyone knows or remembers that when Streetfighter (Think it was SF2) there was 2 versions on the tape (Commodore 64 version). Euro version and American version. The American version was so much better, smaller more detailed characters and backgrounds, also better playability. Euro version was pretty terrible.

I discovered a few days back that there was a Euro version of Bionic Commando and American version also. Euro version has good smooth scrolling and the commando lookd like a dude with his purple hair. American version looks kinda ok, scrolling is juddery though, title screen is different but with the proper Bionic Commando logo at the time. Commando looked more inkeeping with the arcade version at the time but still not quite as good as the Euro version. Finally, the bionic arm on the American version has quite a small reach making it a bit more difficult to actually play and swing across gaps.

    Bizarre eh?!!!
