Hi people,
I'm getting myself a new PC (i5 750 / Radeon 5850 etc) to replace my Athlon XP 3000+. As such I will be in a position to actually run games written over the last couple of years.
What would you guys recommend I should go for? (I have a varied taste...)

Are you looking for PC specific titles or are console ports ok? Here's a list of some of my fave games I've played in the last few years (in no particular order):
Prototype
COD 4 and 5
Crysis and Crysis Warhead
Assassins Creed
Dawn of War II
Red Alert III (worst in the series imo but still worth a go)
Fear 2 (scary and atmospheric as hell and stunning graphics)
Mirrors Edge (shortish but unique nonetheless)
Sins of a Solar Empire
Theres enough to get you started. Quite a diverse array of games as well.
Fallout 3
Bioshock
FEAR 2
Burnout Paradise

I'll definitely give Fallout 3 a go. I played the demo of the original and it seemed fun though I never bought it...
I always enjoyed the C&C series - C&C was the first PC game I bought (though I had played Dune II which was ace :-) ). I think I'll get one of those unless a decent competitor has arisen.
Any suggestions for more strategy games - I loved all 4 of the Civilization games. (+ Alpha Centauri...)

Definitely recommend Fallout 3.
Left 4 Dead and the Orange Box as well. Actually just install steam and you'll be spoilt for choice
Noticed you said strategy, I'm afraid I haven't played many recently apart from C&C and Red Alert.
Apparently Sins of a Solar Empire is good, but I haven't played it myself.

Company of Heroes with expansion packs is excellent.
Machinarium (doesn't need a good graphics card, but excellent still the same)
I've not played it but Risen is going down quite well at the moment
Everything else I like is a tad over two years old, and my graphics card is only a 7600GT, so can't help you there.

Surpised nobodys mentioned the Total War Series, if ya like RTS or turn based, it's a nice mix of them both
Oh yes! I liked Rome: Total War, though it got kind of samey after a while. Any more?
Empire Total war is finally playable or at least for me it is. Its as much fun as total war and if you liked that your love empire once its fully patched that is.
Only other two I could recomend are the STALKER series, but they tend to be hit and miss with people, and X3 Terran conflict. Enjoyed them both very much but X3 and STALKER clear sky can be a dog to run.

If you don't mind running a couple of older games - Deus Ex and Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. Two of the finest examples of in-game fiction ever.
if Rome was the last ya played, then theres Empire as been said, Medeval 2 and it's Expansion, Kingdoms.
