Re: List of DRM-Free PC Games

King's Bounty: Armored Princess is DRM-free, not even requiring a media check (a pleasant surprise given that the prequel, Kings Bounty: The Legend, did use a disk check).

As for a definition of DRM-free, it should in my view mean no online or media checks or anything that could hinder a legitimate purchaser from installing a game onto a new PC (such as hardware-linked licence keys). "Once only, ever" registration (as used by most shareware, where purchasers get an individual licence key) is the only method of restricting unauthorised use that avoids the likelihood of inconveniencing legitimate users (the program checks a locally stored blacklist, updated when new versions are released, to prevent use of pirated keys).

Sounds like DotEmu.com has not been mentioned in this thread.

All their games are DRM-Free, and offered in localized versions when available. They have a few popular series such as Still Life, Syberia, Atlantis, Return to Mysterious Island, Moto Racer and more that are not on GoG.

    Probably more, have a look.

I couldn't finish amnesia but I liked how a preorder gave you the option to register on steam or use their version as well

The Humble Frozenbyte Bundle is completely DRM-free, and includes 4 or 5 games. I think the bundle has finished now, but that they are planning on having new DRM-free bundles in the future.

Re: List of DRM-Free PC Games

As far as I know, EgoSoft's X- series of games are DRM-free, once the available patches have been applied. I like being able to play without having the disks to hand, despite the disk space required. It makes me wonder why they bothered with DRM in the first place. I won't buy a game unless it's DRM-free or until an official patch removing it is released. At least I save money by waiting to buy.

The main point is to reduce pre-release date piracy. Once a game has been released it's not so important.

The Witcher 2 is another game with the DRM removed after release.

I suppose you're right. It works for me so I'm not complaining about this tactic. I get a cheap game and, most importantly, a game that I can actually play when and where I want to. I'm not too worried about missing out on the hype of the latest release. It's to be encouraged, though I'm sure we'd all rather be treated as valued customers and not potential criminals from the outset.

I'm no beginner in the PC arena but still have games that I can't play thanks to DRM. To add to my anger, I lost my XP OS too, after the motherboard in my games machine failed. Perhaps I should think myself lucky that I have any software that still works. The fact that I'm not the only one who's been ranting along these same lines for years suggests that something isn't working.

    Thanks

To get things started, I have a copy of Splinter Cell Chaos theory without DRM - it's the one with Ubisoft Exclusive and Focus Essential at the bottom of the case. AFAIK the original version had Starforce.

Edit: Games which include DRM on purchase but can be removed by a patch are also welcome on this list but please state if this needs to be done. Also I suppose you could post games with a disc check but make sure that's made clear in your post so people can decide for themselves if that's OK. Thanks.

Technically the game was released completely DRM free on day 1, that was only on GOG.com though if I recall correctly.
I know they wanted to release every version of the game DRM-free as well but since they needed a publisher for the distribution they made them put DRM on the retail copies. CD Projekt RED are some of the coolest cats in gaming though haha. Love their games and the way they do business.

Indeed. But as they're part of the same company as the developers, they know they weren't going to lose any copies during distribution

Oh yea, I know GOG and CD Projekt RED are both and the same, but I believe GOG only handled the digital distribution of the game while at the time it was distributed by Atari Inc. in retail. I guess I should of worded my original post better

Re: List of DRM-Free PC Games

I heard on a Steam forum that a fair few of the games on steam are DRM free. Games that are like this use steam as a content manager / installer only and the game itself can be played regardless of steam being run (via the [game].exe in the games folder).

Anyone got any solid info on this?
