Battlefield 1942
3 months playing a demo every lunchtime followed by years of playtime and mod development seals it for me.
Many others come close - very close - but BF42 has to be the one for me.

Probably the original C&C, the installation music still gives me shivers.

Dunno about best game of all time, too many to choose from but the Max Payne story really got me hooked into the game and made it really enjoyable, certainly one of my most memorable.
Sensible Soccer on the Amiga or the Championship/Football Manager series.
Max Payne was fantastic but I think maybe Grim Fandango wins it for me. I'd never played a game like it before and it's story/setting was really interesting to me.
Legend of Zelda - Link to the Past on the SNES. As much as OOT was vaunted as the best version (and it is very good), I love the style of LttP and there really is so much to do... If I ever get time, I'll try to play it again (if my cartridge still works...)
Il2 without a doubt
Single player Thief hands down
Fallout 1&2 share the 1st place with X-Com series
hmmm, as for whole games, its got to be either, Gran Tourismo, or FF7. Both of them look and play beautiful, wasted my teenage life playing them both. Then has to be half life, followed by Gears of War, there's no better feeling then sticking a chainsaw in somebody, fact
Elite.
Probably because of my age at the time but I've never invested so much time and effort into a game. I did manage to fit in some time to drink and chase girls but Elite's up there with my early teenage memories. Many a happy hour spent hunched over my Commodore 64 battling Thargoids and trying to get good prices for everything.
Even now Grace Jones' 'Slave to the Rythm' takes me straight back to those days. I used to replace Slave with Lave (one of the planets) in my head which made me happy. Hmm.. I've probably said too much..
Lords of Midnight on my Commodore 64 was another favourite; Gunship, Uridium and Beach Head are up there too. The Wing Commander series (one of the main reasons I got a PC!) were totally immersive and addictive too.
Sorcerer's Island and 3d Monster Maze on the ZX81 were also favourites (back when all this were fields and many of you were barely a glint in the postman's eye.)

Deus Ex without a dout, spent ages getting it to run on my anuts P2 350mhz PC with onboard GFX and ended playing it in a window but it was still bloody excellent and kept me wanting more..
For me it would have to be Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The world was a joy to explore, it had a wonderful score, the controls were intuititive, the combat fun, and the story was full of memorable moments and characters.
It's a close contest between that and Wind Waker/Panzer Dragoon Saga though.
