    Favourite game of all time

What's your single favourite game of all time on any platform and why? It doesn't have to hold up favourably to today's games - it just has to have had a massive impact on you when you played it at the time.

It's a very tough call for me, but I think Secret of Mana on the SNES. I don't think I had played a JRPG before then and I loved the story, the characters, the size of it and the combat mechanic. Of course there have been better RPGs since, but none had such a large impact on me.

    Gah.. so many close ones..

If you define it as impact then it's probably Wing Commander II - I don't think it's my favourite game of all time, certainly not what I'd consider the best game. But it had a huge impact on me and what I realised games could be capable of.

Il-2 and all of it's incarnations.

Still playable in 2009, and still tense. Still wortth showing people how to play too. Good community.
Hard as rock to learn, uber uphill learning curve. It's best because there are no "levels" or "perks". It really is skill. All skill.

Il2, it has to be. I'm hoping and preying the console version will be as good.

Some great choices there. I'm filling up with nostalgia!

I've completely missed this one but I tempted to give it a go on your recommendation. Is there a particular incarnation or pack to look out for? I imagine you need a proper joystick to play rather than gamepad/mouse/keyboard too so recommendations for cheap sticks would be appreciated too!

Mafia, without a doubt. Just the storyline and the incredible gameplay aspects of it.

Re: Favourite game of all time

Always hate this type of question as I probably have a favourite on every system released :S

If I did have to choose just one game, it would have to be Robotron and on the Williams Arcade cabinet. The amount of money and time I wasted as a kid on this game. When it was released on the PS1 with the williams arcade collection myself and a few friends clocked in almost 7 weeks of constant play with this game during summer after our work placements for Uni.

Recently I just got it for the XBLA and I plan to put some more serious time into it

Re: Favourite game of all time

Single Player has to be Shenmue on the Dreamcast. In its day it was a technical marvel and the story was also top class. It cost $70 million to make so it wasn't cheap and would have had to be purchased twice by every single Dreamcast owner in order for Sega to turn a profit

Multiplayer has to be Counter-Stirke:Source or EVE Online.

Re: Favourite game of all time

    Ohh, tough.

Fallout 2 + 3 both made me laugh throughout. They showed a good RPG did not need to be about long beards and magic. And both made with great imagination. Also Vampire Bloodlines was an amazing world as well.

But I go with Fallout 3 for just how big and clever it is. It introduced me to DLC and is one of the few games I am still playing solidly in almost a year. And I am still finding things I have missed in previous games.

Tough decision to choose one but I guess it will be Goldeneye on the N64, so much of my life went towards hiding in my proximity mined vent.
