    ELITE Anniversary

Ok so how many people here frittered away hours of their spare time chasing the ultimate "ELITE" rating?

Oh and for my money one of the greatest games ever written, either on the BBC or the Amiga versions.

    Re: ELITE Anniversary

I remember queuing to get Frontier on release day, I was attended a massive Amiga show in London at the time. Mainly dribbling over the A4000s running a VR game.

    Re: ELITE Anniversary

Loved this game, ahh they were the days........

The BBC Micro only had 32k of memory, but out of that came the screen and machine use, so Elite had to fit into 22k which is less than most emails these days," said Mr Braben

We crafted every single byte and would work for hours just to free up three or four bytes so we could put in a new feature or ability

Pretty much the same here, EVE online is around 99.9% of the PC gaming then the other .1% is L4D. Although EVE might take a back burner if AION is any good. Not buying it on release, I ain't that daft. Will go around to a friends that was silly enough to buy it and I will see how it goes from there xD

    Re: ELITE Anniversary

Pretty sure I managed to hit Elite status eventually

BBC version was a piece of excellent coding indeed.. written in a quarter of the space of Windows Calculator!

    Re: ELITE Anniversary

Only ever got to Deadly then lost the tape. Worked my way back to Dangerous.
Simply the most enjoyable/engrossing game I ever played: being a teenager probably helped though. My attention span seems to be going down as I get older...

My friend (a mad WoW player) has given up WoW and tried AION, he said it wasn't very good (he looked a bit upset as well )

    Re: ELITE Anniversary

Never played the original Elite, but did play a lot of Frontier on my Amiga. Have to admit, I only reached Elite in the end by cheating (mining an asteroid somewhere on maximum time accerleration did it).

Anacondas, Boas, isn't it? Wasn't it? Jumpers for goalposts, careful rotation to match the space station before you could afford a docking computer for the funky sounds of the Blue Danube; Thargoids! Watch out! Commander Jameson, on the run from the police; look, mother, I've made Elite status! Marvellous.

    Re: ELITE Anniversary

I got to Elite status on both the BBC and Amiga versions (I can be a bit retentive when it comes to things) but I do remember it being harder on the Beeb version. Though that may have been because I knew what I was doing by the time I did Frontier.

Docking computers were a must, the second thing I bought after a bigger cargo area from memory. Nothing ruined your day like ploughing into the side of a spacestation after spending 20minutes to line yourself up.

Definately one of those rare games that utterly changed the face of gaming, which considering the processing constraints makes the achievement all the more significant. If I had to pick a top10 games of all time this would be in it, and watching the video reminded me of all the fun I had

    Re: ELITE Anniversary

I played frontier on the amiga for ages, probably over a year of frontier and little else. Loved it. Was shocked at the time that they fit a whole 3d universe on 1 floppy until it was pointed out that it was almost all vectors with very little in the way of biitmaps (they reused the faces alot). I agree abiyt the docking computer, was soooooo frustrating.
Didn't play elite that much did play it a little on the electron. Didn't make elite rating on either, but I was more bothered about making money than that (was a bit of a capitalist when I was younger).
Doubt I'd have he time to play a new elite, but I'd probs get it if it gets made (though I have no desire to play any other space trading games (like eve etc..)
