    Nvidia 3D on the cheap

Just thought you guys might be interested in this.

    http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/09/...sion-discover/

Can't really be bothered to explain what it is so your best to just read the article but from the screen shots i've seen it looks good.

Now i'm going to go and test it out.

It almost seems like a joke when you first hear about it. The only bit of "hardware" needed besides an NVIDIA graphics card GeForce 8 series or better is a pair of red/blue anaglyph glasses. Yes, these are the same cardboard and plastic glasses given away at 3D movies or come free with some comic books. Do-it-yourself types might find a way to build a fancy pair of homemade glasses. NVIDIA gives away a branded pair bundled with some video card offers, but they're no better quality than the ones you'd find anywhere else. However, the cheap glasses make up the low-tech end of a pretty sophisticated software remedy to bring 3D graphics to the average gamer.

Anaglyphic 3D is good, but it is not as good when compared to the new 3D technology with the polarising glasses.

The old anaglyphic method causes colours to be a bit "off" and doesn't have the same depth of field, plus some people already using this have stated that it hurts their eyes even more than if using the 3D monitor & glasses.

True but you can't complain if it's free.

From what i've played i'd say it's best for driving games not shooting due to ghosting.

I have to say though it's pretty clever of Nvidia to do this as i know want to go out and get the proper kit.

Analgyph tends to cut out most of the colour.

    Check out http://mtbs3d.com/cgi-bin/rss_blog.cgi?news_id=48

The reasonably priced options are therefore :

Anaglyph : dirt cheap. Crap colour.
LCD shutter glasses : cuts light level in half. Needs 120Hz refresh. Better on CRT monitors. Works with a few TFT. Crap driver support. Very cheap on ebay.
3D Monitor : The Zalman Trimon is pretty cheap now, all things considered. Resolution cut in half when doing 3D, must keep head fairly still.

I think the recent Nvidia glasses are basically updated LCD shutter glasses. They only work on 120Hz TFT/Plasma displays and will need a half decent graphics card. The increased brightness of TFT helps over the halving of brightness.
