GTA IV pc... what a mess

I loved GTA 4 on the xbox and decided to get it for the pc today. I wish I didn't.

The game is a mess. My system more than exceeds the recommended requirements, but even with everything on the lowest settings the fps is still way below playable levels. Driving even remotely fast brings the game to a crawl, and I usually end up crashing into some invisible object which will appear 5 seconds after I've flown through the windscreen. Not only does the game look terrible on the lowest settings, it's unplayable. Sounds stutter, objects pop in and textures take an age to load. At one moment I was floating in mid air for about 2 minutes before the road texture loaded. Ridiculous!

Waste of money, trying to look for fixes and patches, but it doesn't look good.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Do you have a USB joystick/steering wheel/gamepad plugged in? I found that having both a keyboard and joystick plugged in at the same time killed game performance for some reason (6fps max).

Other than that i've actually had a remarkably smooth experience with it, even before the first patch. Given the amount of problems people have been having i've clearly been very, very lucky.

On my current PC, however, i've found that the game gets more and more stuttery the longer I play in one session. ie, after about 30 minutes of playing, the fps drop so much that I have to restart it because it gets so hard to drive.

Has anyone got any idea what that might be?

Re: GTA IV pc... what a mess

I have to say I have had no trouble what so ever with this game, my specs are in my sig below. It does run noticably better in windows 7 though, roll on thursday!

Games for windows live should apply the patches automatically, the patches do improve the game significantly.

Its strange seeing as our specs are very similar.

Something is definitely wrong with your system. When I played the game on my old Pentium D( with geforce 7900gs and 2GB ram) I haven't experienced anything like that although driving fast was like watching a powerpoint presentation.

Re: GTA IV pc... what a mess

To be honest, GTA has a bit of a reputation for rubbish console ports to PC.

GTA IV has a terrible reputation even on top of that, although I haven't played it myself.

Re: GTA IV pc... what a mess

Sorry to hear of your troubles, have a search for GTA IV PC threads and you should get quite a few that have been written. I owned it on PC before and have since sold it, just couldnt get into the game, but technically, I got it to work smoothly in the end, and that was even before the latest patches came out.

The main probs with the first few iterations were that the resolution was the main factor, as it would scale up shaders etc with a res hike. I'm sure that this was fixed in subsequent patches, but obviously I havent tried it as I've sold it.

Unfortunately, the opinion does seem to be split down the middle with people saying "Its fine" and others saying "Its cack". Hope that you manage to get your props sorted mate.

Agreed - there are some pretty one sided opinions out there.

I found that my specific problem started after installing the 1.0.4.0 patch, so you might want to go through the patch versions one by one and see which works best for you.

Re: GTA IV pc... what a mess

Driving along the train tracks pretty fast and ended up like this, haha.

I've got all the latest patches and updates and put everything on low (even the resolution) and whilst the lag isn't as bad the pop in is still terrible. Some textures take forever to load (like above) and it's very stuttery.

I have no idea why it's like this. You'd think that with specs better than the recommendations playing at low settings should be a breeze. Apparently not o.O ?

Works absolutely hunky dory on my PC, and it's not even amazing spec considering the meerkat these days!

I don't know how anyone's opinions can't be one sided? It works fine for me (after a bit of problems with my dead GPU) so my opinion is that it works fine as it's never had problems on my system.

It should work fine on your system on medium-high settings, I used to run it fine on an E6600 and an 8800GTS. Have you tried reinstalling it?

Sorry I wasn't referring to what you said at all...I was just agreeing with jonathan_phang that a lot of people seem to love it or hate it on the PC, partly because of the many glitches that cause it to either run fine, or not at all!

I had a few loading problems when I turned everything up, but I was gaming at 1920x1200 and I think thats cos I've only 512MB of VRAM. Nothing like the problems you've described though, a reinstall is definately a good idea.

I reinstalled and still have the exact same problems.

Though, I can play for about 30 minutes before things start getting horribly laggy and the game either crashes or becomes so unplayable I exit out of it.

I'll keep looking for solutions and such online, if anyone has anymore suggestions they are welcome to share.

Have you tried turning off Clip Capture in the Options/Game menu? That can help/cure problems, particularly with performance.

    Will try that now .

edit: Wow, that worked great. Turned up the resolution to 1920*1080, put everything else on medium and I get no lag! I get a little bit of pop in still but no where near as bad as before. It's definitely a lot more playable, and better looking, now .

    Thanks!
