so, how does the "match making " thing work? I don't have a Ps3 or a 360, so never play console games online.
Is it like a "join my server now" list of people online and then it goes live simulataneously? kinda thing? So people can't join that game midway through a map?

Not like there is a lack of good titles out or incoming soon anyway
Basically, from what I understand it will work like left 4 deads current system, where it finds a match for you. However, unlike L4D where there are dedicated servers (hybrid), 402 stated that there will be no dedicated servers in MW2 and instead it will use a P2P system. This means the person with the best upload speed (regardless if this is suitable for hositing) will be selected as the host, which is great for them, but for everyone else this is likely to be very inconsistent!
In addition to this, no mods, no custom maps and we're likely to have console style player limits. Due to the fact that not many people will have systems/connection to host the number of players we can with dedicated boxes.
To be honest this has been my biggest gaming let down to date!

Zak most of what Mike.c has posted is correct. What isn't explained is how the match making works. If its anything like the Halo3 system, then you will be matched to people based on your experience and rank (depending on game type) Normally this will be done in a banding system, so if your rank 10 you should be matched up with people around your level, so effectively level 5-10 (Halo3 works on a 10 level system)
If you have joined up with a couple of friends for some matchmaking mayhem then the system will take the highest ranking player and use them to find a close enough match. This can lead to an imbalance (and levellers can plague the game) when that newbie friend of yours joins you and gets absolutely caned. Not fun at the best of times.
The other downside is time. It can take an eternity to find a game if your in a group. With this new system if someone drops out it can cause problems, but if the host drops out, then you have to wait for the game to select a new host and this has caused a few dropped players.
This is not the way forward for multi-player on the PC.

I'm not sure if Activision will fold and add dedicated server support this late, the games got to be close to going gold if it hasn't already, I think the best we can hope for is for it to be patched in at a later date tbh
Match making, on the 360 at least, is all handled using the Trueskill system if I remember correctly. That means how you're ranked within the system is based on two numbers, the first is your average skill level and the second is the systems "belief" in that skill level. For instance as a new player you might win the first few games you play easily giving you a fairly high skill level but because you've only played a few matches the system doesn't "believe" in that skill level and if your early victories turn out to be flukes it will quickly make a big change to your rank and set you up against some easier opponents. Over time and plenty of games the changes the system makes to your rank become smaller and smaller because it not only has an idea of how skillfull you can be as a player but how consistent you are and will in theory set you up against suitable opponents.
I have just cancelled my pre-order too. RIP COD....
Probably be the externt of the mainstream news on this, but hey....

As much as I agree that it's the height of blind stupidity to cull the dedicated servers, I don't think I'll be cancelling my preorder. To be honest I seem to be one of the few people who bought the first MW mostly for the single player and I'll be buying this one mostly for the SP as well.
I've signed the petition though and my fingers are crossed for a patch later on. This is not the way forward for PC gaming.
88,000 sigs on the petition now. I reckon it'll hit 100,000+ by the end of today.
Anyone seen a response from IW? Or do you think they are just lapping up the publicity, even if it's negative?
IW are screwing us pc users over like trash
just a thought. could this be just a big massive "publicity stunt" to gain more advertising and PR for the pc version of this game?
maybe this game WILL HAVE dedicated servers all along and just pulled a big stunt over us?
Of course it is possible, but IMHO unlikely.
I suspect the whole thing is a counter-piracy measure; ensuring MP games connect to an IW server for verification every game. It's also a way to make PC users to pay for downloadable content - so yet another revenue stream for IW.
That said, IW have now claimed the petition, currently running at 95,452 sigs "won't be ignored".
