That's got to suck.
Oz doesn't have an 18 category yet, so anything over 15 gets auto-banned.
How can a game where you mow down thousands upon thousands of critically ill but stable humans possibly be banned?
lol, "critically ill".
THEY'RE DEAD, JIM.
Yes, it's violent - but still, banning is way out of the line, there has been no proven connection (that professional psychologists (not lawyers called jack) take seriously) between violent games and violent behaviour - you'd think with 17years + since release of doom they would have sorted something out for higher ratings by now, it seems to me to be a deliberate ploy to ban all adult games without attracting as much media attention as if they made a "Video game nasty" law

Umm, yes it is.

Even a PDF of the report there. Though it said the same thing in the original link so I guess you just don't bother reading.
No, it's not.
They haven't 'banned' it, they've refused it classification. Not because of any link between violent games and violence but because their rating system doesn't allow for any games with adult content. It's a subtle difference but an important one, it's also one of the few reasons it sucks to live in Oz.Unsuitable for a minor to see or play
If you read the document you'll see that it's been refuse on the grounds that it's not suitable for anyone under 18 to play, exactly the same as the UK, except that Australia has no 18 rating for games for it to be released under.
Heh - I just sent my 16 year old son in Canberra whole bunch of '18' games for his birthday. (thanks Steve A)
The intrusion of the state in this and other areas of technology policy demonstrate the last two governments inability to understand with how things are in real life. Internet filtering anyone ?
I would like to point out that I have many happy memories of playing the original UT with him, when he was far younger than this. (He loved the Redeemer) Despite these depraved activities he is now a well adjusted lad, who plays basket ball for the local team (6'4" @ 16 ffs) and holds down a job in his spare time whilst at school.
I'd post a picture (being the proud dad and all) which shows him a head taller than the coach and towering over the team, but it has kids names and identifiable info. Probably not a good idea in this day and age. Not that I believe it's a risk, but I may be in breach of some law/regulation on posting pictures of a child...Sucks to be a parent when you can't boast about your kids.
Society's to blame,
Or possibly Atari.

No, I think you're missing the point. It would be banning if they had a suitable classification and they still chose to refuse it but it's pretty clear that it was judged to be outside the classifications available to them.
Which is not to say that they're not wrong for not having an 18+ rating for games, it's plainly shortsighted of them in this day and age, but it's also mad to think that it's all a conspiracy against Left 4 Dead 2.
Like I said, it's subtle. To say that it's been banned implies that that game has been specifically targeted, outside of normal classification, to be refused sale. In fact what has happened is that the game has failed to meet standards laid down for classification and has fallen foul of the fact that there are no higher levels of classification available.
There is a serious problem in Oz in that games are not regarded highly enough as an adult entertainment and that there is a massive black hole in their classification schedules but not that anyone is 'out to get' or ban video game nasties.
