DoW 2 Vs Sins of a solar

    Hey Guys

It's Friday (and the missus is away for the weekend) so thought I'd treat myself to a game. I've narrowed it down to Dawn of War 2 or Sins of a Solar Empire.

Quite simple really, which one do you think I should go for? Especially keen on hearing from any that have played or own both.

    Cheers!

Re: DoW 2 Vs Sins of a solar

havent played DoW2 a huge amount, but I did find a bit of a let donwn compared to the original. Sins on the other hand was a bit of a suprise, and I found it quiet addicitive. One big plus point for sins is that its noticeably different to to other newish stuff, so my vote is sins, for now, then DoW2 later on.

Re: DoW 2 Vs Sins of a solar

If you want to build bases and big crowds of troops - then DoW 2 is not for you.

I was sulking all night after I played it and found it was a squad based setup. I wanted the ability to build bases and research, but it wasn't to be.

It's a good game, but it's not really DoW or Soulstorm is it

Re: DoW 2 Vs Sins of a solar

I own both but have only played DoW II extensively. What I will say is this. If you want pick up and play go for DoW II, much easier to get into IMO. What I will also say is either would be good.

HOWEVER having played and completed DoW II I have to say its really rather good. Totally engrossing, a weekend is just about perfect for it, if you get into it, you probably won't leave the house. I completed in a matter of days and I had stupid amounts of Uni work on at the time. Just ended up staying up really late playing it! It's a really unique blend of RPG levelling up and artifact collecting and real time strategy...if you've ever played heroes of might and magic series it's like a genius real time version of that set in the Warhammer 40k universe.

Being a massive fan of Heroes I have to say this is a massive plus point. The nature of the missions does get a little repetitive ranging from 'defend base' to 'kill a big boss at the end' and not much more besides. Nevetheless the games short enough that it doesn't really get tedious and if your like me you'll just get sucked in by the plethora of artifacts, guns, weapons, armour, jetpacks, teleportation devices, 'power' hammers, swords and claws. You literally seem to change equipment before every mission.

Unlike most RTS games though, there's never too much going on, your only ever in control of 5 squads at the very most (and its usually only 4) which means no-one is expendable. The small number of squads means you can be quite tactical in how you set them up and it also allows for the RPG elements because there's so few characters. The story elements are done quite well and I think it's generally quite a polished title.

Sorry if that was a bit of a long winded response...

For a weekends worth of gaming- DOW2. Sins is really in depth and could completely suck you in. Really they are completely different games. DOW2 is RTS lite (might be a bit harsh) and Sins is proper hardcore micromanaging every aspect down to tying up peoples laces involved.

You wouldn't be attempted to confuse the issue by suggesting that DoW with expansion packs might be a better option now would you?!

I've played the demo of DoW2 and i did miss the usual base building, army expanding options that you get with usual RTS'. On the other hand, because I knew I had limited men it made the game surprisingly enjoyable, in that the pressure was on to keep them alive, more so then in say Company of Heroes which I really enjoy playing.

Well I've got the weekend to get really into a game, but to be honest most evenings she watches Home and away, followed by neighbours, eastenders, coronation street and various other mind numbing programmes (to be fair, she says the same about my games!) so I have plenty of time for a micro management title too. I play Civ 4 non stop and like to think that's fairly involved, not to mention time consuming!

Re: DoW 2 Vs Sins of a solar

    Supreme Commander!!

Seriously, DoWII and SoaSE are completely different games. DoWII is amazingly fun and intense, but in short bursts. While SoaSE more slowly builds up.

Of course, it depends if you want a story/campaign or not - SoaSE doesn't have one, while the DoWII campaign and risk-esque planets/system control is pretty involving (the warhammer 40k universe is a rich one).

Re: DoW 2 Vs Sins of a solar

I also own both Sins and DoW II.

I will firstly say that the Sins addon 'Entrenchment' completely changes the way the game is played in terms of tactics (but in a good way). I find it makes even the most defensive player a little more attacking!

Secondly, Sins and DoW II are both very much forefront runners in two separate genres of Real Time Strategy. Sins is heavy in micro management, long term goals and a normal game can take anything between a couple of hours to a few weeks! What is fantastic is that online games can be saved and you can come back to them with your friends or just new people you happen to meet whilst playing.

DoW II is also much improved since the free update that was released a short while ago. The Last Stand mode is fantastic fun and provides a level of Hero progression which is very functional and fun. Remember that you are also buying a very well made single player storyline, something which is not available in Sins.

DoW II online tends to be quite unforgiving, it is very fast paced and will take a decent length of time to really get used to. It ventures more into unit placement and rock/paper/scissors tactics than the outright fleet make-up/excessive force tactics you would use in Sins.

I would say that if you are searching for an RTS that can provide you with some instant gratification, DoW II should 100% be the choice. If you prefer to look at the bigger picture and enjoy something which will take a great deal of time to really enjoy to the max, Sins is your game. Just be prepared to watch hours fly by and wonder what on earth has happened! (The missus will wonder where you have gone!)

As for Supreme Commander, it is truly a fantastic RTS also. However you will have to put up with GPG.net which is sometimes enough to put you off playing all on its own.

I found it alright, certainly better than the terrible combination that is both Games for Windows Live and Steam that DoWII needs (that's the single worst thing about it).

Re: DoW 2 Vs Sins of a solar

I have been playing sins since it came out and I have been playing with the entrenchment addon since it was in beta. I highly recommend it, its simply the best 'large scale' RTS out there.

I only played the beta of DoW and I really didn't like it, I much preferred the original DoW and its addons.

This is exactly what myself and my friend do. Despite us working so effectively as a team against numbers of cheating Sorian AI, we inevitably end up firing as many game ending weapons at each other without the other noticing...
