Not talking about flash type games, we did that here, I'm talking free to download & play games, MMORPG's & the like. Here are a couple I've tried recently:

Did anyone ever play Nukezone? I played this a few years back when it was a bit more popular and remember being completely devoured by it for a few months. Very nice competitive clan focused game.

I always found Chart Wars 3 (it's a text-based music industry simulator) addictive, though it's a few years old now I believe.

I also heard about Quake live which is basically Quake 3 Arena but not sure if its up and running
Also old school gta 1 and 2 which can be downloaded for FREE off http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/
For MMO's there's a few which are free to play, micropayment style, ie they have a 2nd ingame currency that you have to buy with real money if you want it, but you generally don't need it.
Of these I can sugest
eXsteel, 3rd person deathmatch mecha type game.
Battle swarm, odd one here, think starship troopers, if you play humans then it's 3rd person action shooter, if you play bugs then it's RTS, missions are basically attack/defend but there are some other types.
9Dragons, martial arts MMO

Quakelive is good, plays just like quake3 did.
All u do is sign up and play and its free.
Umm quake3 is/was "free to play" you just had to find games running, granted you had to buy it.
Does wolfenstine enemy territory still exist? that was free to down load and play, I remember spending many hours on that.
