Quick poll - who prefers cutscenes in games to help tell the story, or who prefers in game plot developments ala Half-Life?
Yes, they're the way forward.
Nope, stick with ingame developments.
Am I bothered?
Depends really, some games they really work well with, but in others they can bring the game down. I really hate cutscenes that you cant bypass and have to watch them ( The Getaway on the PS2 being one of em )
I am not bothered about cut scenes tbh, never really take to much notice of how they look etc, aslong as I know whats goin on within the story. In game developments seem to be the way.
Characters always look polished in cutscenes, Looking at HL2 the models look good enough that either cutscenes or just listening to others within the game wouldnt be too different.
I like cutscenes (especially using the game engine) if:
1) They're done well.
2) You can skip them. Nothing is worse than having to restart a level for the tenth time and watch a ten minute cutscene all over again. By the end, you can repeat all the words yourself!

"Well, there was your Uncle Tiberius who died wrapped in cabbage leaves but we assumed that was a freak accident."
I love cut scenes...this is mainly based on my love of the red alert series.
Signature is 57 % complete. Please check back later.
I quiet like em tbh....Cept the reator one in Farcry but thats more cause Im stuck and Ive watched it loads of times now
Yes for cut-scenes, they've been used for so long, now, but as far as possible keep them using the engine, and they should never be a replacement for in-game development. Few and far between I think, the icing on the cake, not the substance of it!
No trees were harmed in the creation of this message. However, many electrons were displaced and terribly inconvenienced.
The cutscenes in Red Alert 2 were great, completely over the top and making fun of themselves. Shame that Generals has nothing of the sort.Originally Posted by Rory

Cut seens in games are great, as long as you can skip the damn things! Like Galant said, they should never replace in game developments. They are only an aid for the story.
What would Max Payne be without them?
stuff using the ingame engine like mgs2 and max payne is ok, but the ones in final fantasy etc despite being well done disjoint it waaaaaaaaaay too much
I remember playing Resident Evil 2, and I was blown away by the cut scenes, its why I still love that game. Those cut scenes brought that game to life.
Cut scenes - the thing hl done wrong. massive annoying unskipable cutscene at the beggining, and a very boring one too. No cutscenes as the game went on and a crap/no existant storyline. I regret buying it, and playing it.
some games work wonderfully using the games engine as cut scenes (splinter cell, MGS), others make you jaw drop using vgi movies (final fantasy 7+).
I agree with the majority here. As long as they're done using the game engine they don't look out of place.
Red Alert 1 and 2's movies however were rather good.
Also they need to be skippable. I CAN'T STAND games with movies/logo screens either when you load it up or exit, or ingame, that you can't skip!! Argh.
