    Football manager 2010

So where are all the football managers on here then?

What do you think of this years game? Harder?

I'm loving it, can't stop playing it, touchline tactics are a great addition I think.

    Re: Football manager 2010

Not really fussed about the touchline tactics, but the tactics creator is a godsend. I wanted to kill every time I had to muck around with a flipping slider.

Anyway, I'm currently in my first season on Dafuge's challenge with Boston United, going reasonably so far but at the rate I'm going (and with the mid-table mediocrity I'm achieving) I don't think there's a hope in hell that I'll finish the challenge before FM11 .

The last FM I played was 2007 but I'm liking this one so far. I'm in my fifth season have taken the mighty Queen's Park into the SPL thanks to (ahem) a sugar daddy of a chairman.

    Re: Football manager 2010

I skipped 2009 after being a heavy 08 and 07 player, I'm pretty happy with this year. I mean although of course I got used to all the sliders etc and enjoyed them, this year feels like you are more realistic, of course the sliders are still there, but the shouts and tactic creator just make it feel a bit less mathematical.

Not sure about the match engine, watching in 3d highlights some of the rather strange things your players do sometimes, but it's still enjoyable... at least when you are winning.

It's a good game for me to play during revision, because 1 stupid mistake from a player and its BOOM Alt+F4 and back to Econometrics in frustration

thankfully they brought the series back with 2010, greatest thing i find about it, is that although the game is similar to its predecessors it's different enough to keep you interested and keep playing it. i still miss 07 & 08 though

It's a long story! Well actually it's not, I needed an annonymous user name for something years and years ago,and there it was, a copy of Championship Manager 99/00 on the shelf, and it stuck, sigh.

Anyway! Biggest success so far was taking over a Leverkusen side in chaos and fighting for relegation, with just a few games to go, guiding them into mid table, but then reforming the squad and winning the Bundesliga in the next year! Apparently my lack of German didnt hinder me at all!

I play a 4-2-3-1 Formation mostly (think Liverpool kind of, but slightly more attacking as the DMC's play as AMC's and it's giving me reasonable success, although havnt tried much lower league management - i dont think I'll ever be able to emulate my Champions League winning Woking side from 01/02 (still the most polished version imo! Maybe I just still havnt got used to non text!)

Well, i did truely love 01/02 aswell. But it had one major flaw that you've pointed out there with Woking. It was far too easy and would always seem to favour your teams. It was always easy to get a crappy team to be best in the world.
Look at me now though, Arsenal 12 games in and i'm 12th in the table and half the team hates me. Which lets be honest is probably about right if Wenger left Much more realistic now. Still, i'll keep getting angry at them until they start moving up the table or i get fired

01/02 was my very first Championship Manager game, and I don't remember anything at all from it... apart from that once I decided to risk giving the negative answer to the press (remember they would ask you questions every now and again and had two/three options - good, average, and rubbish ) and said that Ryan Giggs hadn't been playing that well, no. He then had a strop for at least 6 months and I'm not sure I ever resolved it.

What I do know though is that I spent days and days on it, got completely addicted and loved every minute of it. I spent no time mucking around with tactics, just used to play. I'm not even sure that I used to make many purchases, it was just great fun

I think my next management game after that might have been FM05, I'm sure I returned the CM game I got in between 01/02 and 05 because I couldn't get into it - it was the first one where Ronaldo played for United I think.

    Re: Football manager 2010

I like how at least apparently, the AI also uses the tactics creator for all its tactics, so it feels more of a level playing field, not tactic "cracking" as there has been in other versions. I still end up fobbing off loads of stuff to my Assistant though. Press conference every week and for every signing? No thanks. Very strange sometimes because the assistant answers as if he's the manager - so the headlines look very odd.

Generaly having alot of fun though, I dont have any games of massive overachievement yet really, I just do OK-Good considering my squad of players, which is realistic really - In reality you cant manage average players into a title winning side, but some managers will still get a bit more/less out of the same team. Seem's well balanced, but not really sold on the match engine, especially my defenders (maybe it's just that they enjoy heading the ball perfectly cushioned down for Rooney to volley past my helpless keeper)

Most amazing match I've had so far was a 6-5 win for Queen's Park over Rangers. I was jumping about all over my living room!

Yes I think the lack of control makes it particularly prone to massive celebration/frustration. (As in real life football). You know if I mess up at PES or COD4 or something, it's my fault or it's good play by someone else whatever. In Football Manager you just find yourself yelling at a small dot representing Steve Bennet as he gives the opposition a last minute penalty. Then you find yourself wanting to hug the small dot representing your GK as he tips it round the post. Then you Alt+F4 after they score from the resulting corner.

Alt F4? You wouldn't be cheating now would you?

Players making a mistake is part of football, you have to accept it in the game or what are you achieving?
Players also respond better to you the longer your in the game. So it might be easier to achieve success with an average team after 5 or 6 seasons than it could be to win with a great team in season 1.
I've managed to claw Arsenal back up to 8th in the table with a good winning streak and the press seem to think every week that each match might be my last. But i'm hanging in there. Partly down to an easy champions league group and a 6-0 win at Birmingham.
