    Warface Crytek's new free-to-play FPS

Has anyone played this yet? Its apparently been in beta in Russia for a while but has now been opened up internationally. It looks pretty good, it's made by Crytek using their CryEngine 3 and it's free. Can't argue with that.

    Youtube demo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Mxd2toc4vE
    Website: http://www.warface.com/

Some parts of the video remind me of Farcry 1, especially how the assault at the beginning behaves. There are a few touches of the newer games like how the hit indicator works, but there are some parts which look like they could do with a little polish. However, the actual gameplay mechanics (not tried it myself) and the absence of a price-of-admission might be enough to tempt some gamers.

How about getting a Hexus squad up and running?

I haven't given it a go yet, it's been out in Korea / Asia for a while now hasn't it?

I haven't been keeping up to date with it... how are they doing the F2P model? Is it just cosmetic (yey) or have they slipped in some P2W stuff?

Re: Warface Crytek's new free-to-play FPS

I just had a quick run in it. It's actually quite nice to play. The shooting mechanics feel good and the guns have nice sound and weight. So as a shooter game, it ticks a good number of right boxes. The coop mission mode is pretty nice as well (as an avid L4D2 player, this is a big plus from me). It's also pretty weird in that it runs off a browser plugin which downloads the whole game. You don't download an installer or anything by yourself, and the game can be windowed in your browser. Weird but it can go fullscreen.

It is kinda pay to win but not as bad as Ghost Recon Online when I tried that. GRO had stuff you HAD to pay to get, but this is largely pay to unlock stuff earlier, as you can win ingame currency to buy most (if not all) of the items. If you actually like playing the game and spend time in it, most items seem attainable (as I said, still early impressions). However, a good number of weapons seem to be side-grades rather than clear upgrades, so it seems to be more about catering to your shootstyle. Do you spray-and-pray (also known as the American Technique) or do you try and pick your shots.

Overall, this game gets a nod from me for its solid gameplay, attractive graphics, acceptable pay system and overall install and running experience.

Re: Warface Crytek's new free-to-play FPS

I'm ok with boosters / pay to unlock earlier / sidegrades. Both Planetside 2 and Tribes Ascend have done this very well and both games I've enjoys that much that I have put some money into them (never more than I would pay for a full price game, that's my personal cutoff )

Will have to check out Warface when I have a bit more spare time and I get through some of my more priority 'to play' games.

Yea I had a chance to play it a while back. They had some co-op missions, but those were literally just go from point A to B while killing as many of these enemies we constantly throw at you along the way, so that got boring quite fast, the actual competitive MP wasn't that bad though. I'll probably just download it now since I found out its released just to see what's different.

Thanks for that, installing it now.

Been taking a break from Battlefield Play4Free for a few days, playing the America's Army Proving Grounds Beta instead, which I can't recommend highly enough.

Re: Warface Crytek's new free-to-play FPS

I watched seannaners play it and the sliding mechanism looks interesting. Hopefully it will have a growing fanbase and show games like call of duty and battlefield that you don't need people to buy it to make an interesting game.

Tribes and Planetside were good in that there werent any weapons that you could only get by paying, but to actually work to unlock them literally took days, which wasnt so great
I like the way blacklight did it, where you could rent guns for 1, 3 or 7 days or get them perm
