Metacritic Platform Power Rankings - Best games of 2009

Sony’s Playstation 3 console has edged out Microsoft’s once-dominant Xbox 360 to finish on top in Metacritic’s first annual Game Platform Power Rankings.
    Interesting reading.....

Better exclusives this year for PS3 i thought..though i bought about the same amount of games for 360.
I bought way more PC games than both put together though.

Agreed. Got most my games on PC this year as well, but yes 2009 has seen some great exclusives for PS3 this year.

True, it still seems to be though that cross platform games are usually better (in terms of graphics etc) on the PS3 than the 360 though. If 3rd party devs could get around that (rather than do straight ports of 360 games) then it would no doubt do better.

I keep feeling the urge to buy some games for my PS3 or Wii because I don't feel like I'm using it enough, but nothing it tempting me at all... other than Ratchet and Clank, at least.

Same here - I downloaded a few demos yesterday from the PSN, but nothing of interest.

I even tried Little Big Planet demo, but I dont really "get" what its all about - the demo its self gave the impression of some condescending sounding old guy (who wouldn't sound out of place on Radio 4 or the World Service) trying to be funny.

I thought it was going to be a platform game, but seemed to be some cross between such a game and a social networking site

Haha, that "old guy" is Stephen Fry, and yeah he's probably made his career out of being a comedian, albeit with a posh voice.

My girlfriend likes it, which was the main reason why I bought it. I'm trying to introduce her to gaming gently

My current collection is FIFA 10, Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction, Dynasty Warriors (can't remember which one, makes no difference anyway) and LittleBigPlanet. That's it.

Assassins Creed 2 begs to differ.

People in the gaming industry and community as a result put waaay too much stock in metacritic if you ask me...

Who else would you have though? You can't get much fairer than taking the average of the big reviewers, although it's quite plain to see that mistakes happen.

GTA IV should never have got such a high rating, for example.

I think its important to remember with Metacritic that its based on US release not EU. tbh can only think of a couple of games of note that i got on PS3 in the UK this year, majority of my PS3 games including Demons Souls/God of War collection (both of which were very high scorers on meta) are all imports.

I don't think that's true - Edge magazine scores are certainly included, as are Eurogamer's.

Comparing between platforms has to be done with caution though - eg: single platform magazines typically score higher than their multiplatform counterparts.

I only have 1 game for my PS3 Slim and I got it when I bought the thing. It just sits there and is never used. My 360 gets hammered, its done hundreds and hundreds of hours.

Indeed, EU game reviews certainly are included yes (for games that have been released in the EU) but im highlighting that there is highly rated PS3 games reviewed on meta which are only available in the US and scored highly (and hence influenced these results)

Sorry to quote myself, but I see my mistake there, I meant to put it the other way around , 360 over PS3 because its aparently easier to develop for (which is what I suggested in the line below

    http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/2...me_To_Show.php

    http://www.bricemorrison.com/?p=267

Metacritic is fine as a reasonably accurate way to quickly get an idea of how good a game is but as I said I think certain people in the industry and gaming community put too much stock in it. When it comes down to it Metacritic's an imperfect system run by one man with a secret formula. There's no real explanation of how exactly Metacritic aggregates as many different kinds of score as it does into one nice simple figure and for that reason I don't really trust it. There are some publications that use percentages, some give marks out of five, others marks out of ten, with a bit of maths it's fairly easy to get an average number out of those scores but what about places like 1up.com? They grade in letters, A, B, C and so on so now it's Marc Doyle's job to attatch a number to that grade, something the reviewers were obviously against in the first place and if you're not privy to the critera by which the game was judged at that particular publication, no easy task. Add that in with the fact that Metacritic "trusts" some publications more than others and that leads me to be not entirely trusting of its scores.

Several company CEO's have made remarks in the past about Metacritic and how shooting for certain scores shapes the games they make but in reality it's not really a great indicator of how well a game will sell either. Pyschonauts and recently Little Big Planet both recieved high scores on Metacritic but they barely sold. Nintendo has a habit of getting decidedly low scores on Metacritic but their products seem to almsot sell themselves.

It's fine to use it as a quick reference guide, but that's it in my opinion.
