Digital Rights Management. If a game is DRM-free then when you purchase it it is yours to do what you like within the law. Games that have DRM can restrict the number of times you can install it and if you need to authenticate the game on an online server every time you play and such. The whole point of DRM is to combat piracy and make it harder to pirate games, but so far all it has done is made the people who buy the game suffer.

It's a possibility, yes, depending on how DRM has been implemented, and by whom, though generally there is supposed to be some mechanism for getting legitimate users out of that situation. But, if they've done their DRM that way, it may mean you need to get an unlock code from the software company's customer service .... assuming the company hasn't gone bust in the meantime.
