PC vs Xbox360 - which to buy for

before i get flamed let me explain the situation, as im sure im not the only one...

I am a avid gamer... used to be a dyed in the wool PC-only gamer, but over the years have lost many a days to my 360...

This used to be OK, as there were games that came out on the pc, and most big games were console exclusive.

But now, with the pc "back in the running" so to speak with many more high profile cross-platform releases it raises a question of which platform to buy for.

Now i guess it comes down to the type of game.. FPS it has to be PC every time for mouse/keyboard.. but having invested quite a bit into home cinema, big telly, HD surround sound etc im beginning to appreciate "the bigger picture" with better sound quality and more consistant framerate etc..

Which leads me to the problem... Bioshock 2 and Mass Effect 2. both are multiplatform... i suppose they are FPS games, but not as "high-action" as say BC2 or MW2..

Normally id go for the PC release every time, but im having thoughts as to plumping for the xbox releases, solely to take advantage of the extra AV hardware i have the xbox running through.. Bioshock in particular i would assume that surround sound will add a large extra dimension to the game then playing it on a 22" monitor with tinny stereo sound.

Does anyone else have the same prediciment?

(and before anyone says hook PC up to tv/av system, i have thought about that but dont fancy shelling out to replace my 8800gt to cope with 1080p)

    Cheers

Then don't most telles will run the inbetween resolutions also, it should be at least capable of outputting 1366×768 or 1440×1080 which is 1080i, i would have a look though the book and see what it supports.

Mass Effect 2 with forced AA and AF looks loverly compared to my 360. The 360 version tries to hide the lack of AA with tonnes of bloom. Looks awful in my opinion.

I've got a PS3 and a PC and recently started getting more games for the PC. I've down sized my PC box just to make it easier to move it to the living room when I want to use the TV.

Not a great solution, but worth it till I sort something else out. Games do look better on the PC and as you say no contest for FPS I learnt that the hard way realising I was rubbish at COD4 with a pad.

Re: PC vs Xbox360 - which to buy for

I am sort of half and half atm. Most of my mates jumped across to the 360 claiming its cheaper than building a PC (which they have gone and spent 1800 quid on games and accessories in a year and can't see the irony) so I tend to get most games for the 360 but FPS is generally on the PC.

However, these days I will grab demo's if possible on the PC and if they can't run well I will get them for the 360 so I can at least play them Although if I build another gaming PC I will no doubt start getting them for the PC again. The machine I have now (in the system specs under the avatar) has to last a minimum of another 2 years.

    Haha

It doesn't help that they P2P host FPS which is unacceptable in this day an age. I distinctly recall getting shot round a corner at least once a match due to a host advantage.

Re: PC vs Xbox360 - which to buy for

I tend to go mostly for 360, when I buy games these days, as I am not putting up with what seems to be commonplace with DRM on PC games. If a suitable game was available on both and didn't have DRM I object to, I'd go PC every time. But as I've more or less given up on PC because of DRM, the 360 is pretty much the only game in town for me (as I don't have a PS3 and am not buying another console, at least, not for that type of gaming, though a Wii is possible when I get around to it).

PC is my main platform. I always buy for PC if I have the choice. Im happy to upgrade pieces as I go along. Modern DRM is a ball ache but I take it in order to get the highest fidelity experience I can get.

Re: PC vs Xbox360 - which to buy for

Totally depends on the game, but anything to do with FPS (or shooting for that matter) tends to play better on a pc imo. I can easily get a 2:1 ratio on COD on a pc, but on the xbox im usually at 0:50 or something terrible ): god i hate controllers.
    I never make sense.

Again depends on the game. Stuff like Supreme Commander would definately prefer a kb+mouse

I do want an Xbox 360 but I can't justify it. However, I recently bought Burnout Paradise for the PC, and it looks simply beautiful at 1920x1200 which you wouldn't get any other way. I don't even have an uber-modern PC either (Core2Duo 6300 / 3GB / Win7 x64 / 512MB Nvidia 9500) and the frame rate is more than acceptable.

Re: PC vs Xbox360 - which to buy for

Depends on the game, first persons I prefer on the pc but the majority of my mates all play them on the 360, so thats the format I buy for. RTS's I simply wont touch on a console so they get bought for the PC. Street Fighter 4 I love so much so I bought it for both

Re: PC vs Xbox360 - which to buy for

Well the horrid frame rate of Mass Effect 1 has been sorted out in 2 tenfold, I have yet to come across any frame rate drops or stutters, they work the Unreal 3 engine better than the people who made it.

It's a more a choice of do you want to be sitting on a computer chair or the sofa, of course your PC will get mods and the like. it's a tough choice Neo.

Re: PC vs Xbox360 - which to buy for

In my opinion it depends on the game - I tend to find that games look a lot nicer on my PC compared to my 360 (that's due to the AA/AF of course).

For example: I got Modern Warfare 2 for the PC, because I did not feel it was worth renewing my XBL Gold account due to the small amount of time I actually spend playing games now. Games like that work just fine on the PC.
More recently I got BioShock 2, again same question PC or XBox 360? I ended up going for the 360 that time.

So basically my advice would be decide on which you think the game would be better suited to, is it a WSAD game? Or is it one you would prefer to use a controller with?
