    1) Reboot Steam - VERY IMPORTANT OR IT WONT START DOWNLOADING
    2) Search 'Supreme Commander 2 Demo'

    Downloading now.

As I completely missed the build up to this I am not in too much of a rush to get it. Hoping it will be on offer some time in the near future and then I'll get it.

Currently available for £26.99 on steam though.

Re: Supreme Commander 2 Demo : Available Now On Steam!

I just played all the missions that were available (except the tutorials). It feels very different from the first one. While the interface is what you'd expect from a pc game, the gameplay has consolitis ie everything has been very simplified.

It does, however, run surprising but the graphics seem to be poorer compared to the first one, e.g. when I shot up the ACU, the mushroom cloud looked horrible and there doesn't appear to have been a shockwave.

Re: Supreme Commander 2 Demo : Available Now On Steam!

I felt like the first Supreme Commander was just too big for my liking. The battles seemed to take absolutely forever, and I usually spent most of the game fastforwarding. Not a huge RTS fan, so I didn't find it all that enjoyable. If it's a big more simplified, I'll give the demo a shot, cheers.

    Is the demo multiplayer ?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

I hope you don't mind Cptwhite, but I posted this on the Aria forum too. Downloading now

And why, just why, are MS still posting their estimated download times for a 56k connection? :|

Totally disagree with that, if you want speedy little skirmishes then play C&C or whatever. Supreme Commander is all about massive tactical engagements, I'd feel lost without being able to zoom right out to a proper battlefield scale.

Not sure you can disagree that it wasn't to his liking We all have our own preferences

But I'm also of the opinion that what was nice about Sup Com was the very fact that it was so large scale and different to C&C. This does look to be a step in the wrong direction for me personally, but that's cool, I'm still enjoying Sup Com and I think it's fairly reasonable for developers to target console markets first and foremost.

This is what I prefer, the longer drawn out tactical missions. This is what went wrong with Dawn of War. DoW1 was spot on and you felt you had an army at your disposal then DoW2 comes along and they make it into a 4 unit hack and slash.

Will give SC2 a shot tonight, must admit I never played the first one xD

Obviously I'm not disagreeing with him having an opinion, but the sentiment of the opinion that he's expressing.

If you want a tight, skirmish game that's over in less time than it takes to work out what's going on then that's fine but it's not Supreme Commander. SupCom was build on the premise of massive battles with long durations and moving away from that pretty much moves away from what made SupCom (and Total Annihilation) so great in the first place.

Having said that, I'm at work so I can't see for myself. I'll give the demo a try when I get in this evening.

On a slightly different tack, what I'd really like to see is a WH40K game on a SupCom/Total War kind of scale. DoW is great but I think they're missing a trick at the moment.

Re: Supreme Commander 2 Demo : Available Now On Steam!

Not managed to even try it myself yet. Hoping to get a good game tonight, but it does seemed to have been dumbed down. I'm reserving judgement until I've played it.

For people who only played the original game, really you need to get the expansion Forged Alliance, it's a major overhaul in balanace, economy, and all the experimentals are much more affordable and work properly (much faster, don't get stock moving past tech1 tanks etc.) It's a epic experience and miles ahead of the original game. Also it should be playable on most people's systems these days. You just need a 3Ghz dual core (or any quad core), 8800GT or equivalent vid card and 4Gb RAM ideally. Which is within everyone's reach.

I'm hoping I like SupCom2, but I know I'm content with playing forged alliance for massive epic battles if I don't.

Just finished playing through the demo and I don't think there's too much to be worried about. It's streamlined but I don't think consolified is the right description.

Re: Supreme Commander 2 Demo : Available Now On Steam!

Just can't seem to escape Nolan North - he's playing the main character yet again!

I'm a huge fan of the Supreme Commander series, particularly Forged Alliance and I'll admit that I've been concerned the new version would disappoint. After spending a few hours playing and replaying the demo today, I'm left with a stupid big grin on my face.

Running in dual screen (yes that's still there) with maxed out AA and AF doesn't appear to be an issue. The engine more than copes with the demo's 300 unit cap, offering silky smooth gameplay despite a ton of explosions going off all over the place. The two campaign maps are much more detailed than before, lots of lush foliage and variety in the terrain - good choke-point design too.

Some aspects have been simplified, resource management requires a lot less, um, management and it's no longer necessary to worry over how buildings are connected to get the most out of them. The new tech tree and research system is miles ahead of the old three tier options - units you build early on no longer become irrelevant, as they are upgraded as you spend your research points. Everything which made the original great is still there, yet this time it's much more accessible.

My only niggle so far is the strategic view when in dual screen - the overlay and additional info it provides isn't available on the secondary display. Hopefully that's just down to this being a demo build.

It's awesome and I love it

Edit: I'll also note that alt-tabbing between desktop and game, in dual screen mode, works flawlessly on my system. The previous games would allow you to return to the desktop but always failed, at least for me, to restore afterwards. Helps a lot when multitasking

My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

0iD: Plus weeing in it every now & again does it good
scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.

Re: Supreme Commander 2 Demo : Available Now On Steam!

Well I've played the demo now. I'm somebody who has played Supreme Commander since it's first beta, so I know the game inside out. I'm disappointed - to the point of cancelling my pre-order.

    Firstly, the positives:

+ The graphics don't look too bad, and low poly units aren't a concern to me to make the gameplay more fluid
+ The flow field pathfinding makes manouvering large army around the screen effortless

The negatives (there are so many, that I can't really list them all, so I'll stick with the most important ones):
    - Simulation speed / unit speed. Everything runs as if in treacle, clearly so it's managable with a fiddly console pad for consoles.
    - No "tech levels" just reserch upgrades - it's just not what Supreme Commander was about
    - I found it very hard to distinguish where the visibility range ended for my units
    - The change in economy so you can't build units till you have the mass is very frustrating. It's a major step backwards, and just makes it like every other RTS in that sense. It's a wierd mixture of Supreme Commander 1 economy mode, and normal RTS style economies, and it just doesn't work for me
    - Your commander can't go under water anymore, why?
    - Planes, WTF how slow can you get. The look slower moving on screen than tech 1 tanks in the first game! Again to make it all controllable by consoles.
    - The scale is much smaller, to make it console friendly.

I'll be sticking with Supreme Commander Forged Alliance, as I suspect a lot of the hardcore community players will be.

Even if I got over my issues with the game, it's just not as "fun" to play as an 8 players, highly skilled 4v4 game on SC:FA.

I understand GPG's reasoning for doing this, but it's not for me so unfortunately, I'm out...

Really got a gree here, I played it and thought I had accidentally downloaded C&C 3. A shame that this one has been wrecked to cater for consoles too, never thought it would happen to supcom.....
