Yeah I heard about that the other day. I wonder how the ACE guys will respond.
The engine is as realistic as it gets at the moment, but the game play and content is another matter.
Despite starting as a BF2 realism mini-mod PR is more about game play and team work nowadays, so whilst there are areas which PR could increase ArmA 2's overall realism it's not the main focus.
The Devs never said they would dumb it down, nor would it be necessary.
Come to think of it I can't see what they'll do better than ACE. The thing that annoys me about Arma2 is the engine limitations. Eg. Being about to chuck a grenade accurately like in MW2.
There may end up being similarities to ACE's improvements of the vanilla game, however I'm sure they'll have different approaches and game play. It's not clear yet what the first "mini-mod" versions will entail, or what their long term plans are so we'll just wait and see.
The focus seems to be on achieving a strong PvP community with standardized "official" servers much like PR for BF2, which would avoid discrepant add-on requirements and major game play differences to an extent.
Keep in mind PR generally mod for their own dedicated community, rather then to compete with other teams or please the masses. Also on BF2 they shared and donated a lot of work with other teams, in some cases recruiting each other's developers.
I'm curious about the engine limitations you refer to, as it seems one of the most mod-friendly games I'm aware of.
At least relative to BF2 which caused many issues to the various mod teams resulting in large elaborate work-arounds.
The engine and modding freedom of VR3 attracts the PR community, especially in aspects such as map size and player limits.
i would go as far as saying that arma 2's engine the most versatile/limitless engine ever.
The stuff you can do on it is amazing and not like any other game out their
