    Strategy games?

    Hey
i'm a pretty broad gamer (rpgs to rts' to fps' etc) and i havent had a decent strategy game for some while now. i was wondering if anyone has a personal reccomendation, or is in the know and has any idea what the big upcomers in the genre are, as i've stopped following the previews and magazines..

    cheers, kirb

The only games that are coming out soon that I can think of are Rome: Total War and Black and White 2 (not sure if that counts, but should still be absolutlely fantastic). I would recommend Medieval: Total War, but I got that from you!

Rome: Total War does look good though! Like I said in the other thread, I love Medieval: Total War, with castle seiges, charging calvary, picking men off with archers, huge trebuchets, etc.

Of course, Rome: Total War should have all of that, with the added bonus of: Elephants! Apparently, the best defence against elephants is burning pigs - the fire scares the elephants. Can't wait...

Edit: Just thought, Warcraft III might be worth a look in, along with the Frozen Throne expansion pack.

Not the newest game on the market, but the best strategy game for a long time IMO; Medieval: Total War. You can pick it up now for about £15, and it's class.

yea mike i may have to borrow that off of you again at some point methinks, because i was mad to flog it for a tenner i'll probably get Rome at some point as the whole series has been no less than impressive. anyone got a release date for it? IGN seems to think it's 2004-01-23 (LOL)

btw i tried warcraft 3, and we didnt click very well. C&C Generals went down well despite its sellout style (probably because of games with murphman and mick- its better when you know people with it), and rise of nations did good with me too. i just have no idea what there is to look forwards to..

Bit of a golden oldie, but I got Homeworld and Homeworld: Cataclysm, both just a fiver from play.com, a few months ago. They're great games, the graphics aren't brilliant (but not terrible), but the gameplay is still as strong as ever. I'm still playing them now, and it was only £5, so I can't complain.

When I tried the Homeworld 2 demo, it seemed worse than the original - no decent new features, and I prefered the old control system. More expensive as well!

WC 3 is very, very good.

How about Battle Realms? Old but not bad...and Stronghold. Holing up in your castle and pouring boiling oil on your attackers...was good fun when I played it, must be 2 years ago though...

And as an aside...I live down the road from you guys I'm in Pitstone, near Tring.

    Fascinating huh??

Medieval: Total War is superb, but is very involved.

WC3 is lighter but still excellent.

My mate who works for EA said that the LotR strategy game is very, very good. But he would say that, wouldn't he?

Warcraft 3 is really good, one of the only strategy games that I actually play now. Got a good learning curve and really good story.

Another one I like is Shogun Total War, bit more in depth than WC3 but many long nights can be spent trying to work out best way to succeed in a battle !

Finally one of my all time favourites has to be Dungeon Keeper 2, dead easy to pick up and play and its really amusing with some of the comments and cutscenes.

That's one of my favourites as well! An absolute classic! The only thing that stops me playing it now is that after however many years of playing it, the computer isn't much of a challenge. The way it plays is quite different from just about any other game (strategy or otherwise), since you don't have direct control over any of your minions.

I'd have to second Age of Mythology - absolutely amazing game. Loved it. Downloaded the bonus missions. Loved them. Some time I hope to get the Titans expansion. I played it once and I was hooked. The 3D graphics are amazing, and it has a more in depth strategical feel than WC 3 which I felt was inferior, I own both.

The scale on AoM is also superb - bigger and better than WC3. Especially on the Titans expansion - seeing those Titans in actions is so cool, and controlling one gives you a sense of unstoppable power - seriously.

    AoM all the way sir!

you got me thinking, and i downloaded the demo. pretty impressive i have to say. i think if i do spend out on anything its between AOM and WC 3, and i will decide on it by the quality of the Warcraft demo being downloaded now. my only problems with AOM are that from looking at the game's forums it has some balancing issues, and the online following seems weak in comparrison to WC3, but we'll see
