Reccomend me a strategy game, now!

I don't really keep up to date with the latest PC games, so I'm not sure what's available. What I'm looking for is a strategy game close in setting/features to that of the awesome Command and Conquer Generals series, or the Age of Empire games.

I've had a look at the new Red Alert 3 game, but the whole thing is a little too sci-fi for me.

I did think about just buying the Generals deluxe pack and Age of Empires III, but I've come across a lot of cases of compatibility issues with W7 64 bit from a google search and am thinking it's not worth the hassle and money to give it a go myself.

    So, any reccommendations?

Napolean Total war, or Empire. Mabee even get the still quite good old ones?? Medieval 2 or Rome.
There's also (although i've not played)
    Supreme Commander 2
World in conflict (£8 at play.com)
    Anno 1404.
    Civilisation 4
    Tropico 3

Any particular theme your wanting, futuristic, WW2 etc. Or just similar to C&C?

Re: Reccomend me a strategy game, now!

    Thanks for your reply mate.

I already have World in Conflict and Empire, but they're not really what I'm looking for.

What I enjoyed about Generals/AoE was the ability to build up your own bases/defenses and entire armies, managing resources etc.

I'll take a look at the other games you listed.

Any particular theme your wanting, futuristic, WW2 etc. Or just similar to C&C?
    Just similar to C&C.

It's rather old now, but if you've not played it yet, Warcraft III is worth a look.

If your after a base building game look no further then supreme commander + forged alliance the first one, massive battles and much fun.

Given you like AOE i would also look at age of mythology and its expansion + rise of nations and its expansion

Company of Heroes ? it even has spiffy DX10 graphics
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Re: Reccomend me a strategy game, now!

Thanks everyone for all your advice.

I've had a look at Supreme Commander, and it seems pretty impressive. I've tried downloading the SC2 demo, but it hangs on this system.

Is there any particular reason for reccommending the original "Gold" edition game, over the newer release?

Any ideas on whether a refresh of the Generals or AoE series is due at all btw?

    Yes, it's a lot better!

Sup Com 2 was designed with the console market in mind so it's all scaled back a lot - graphics, scale of battles etc. It also has a more traditional RTS resource structure which doesn't encourage the base layout strategy of the first one. It is a lot more accessible though, but if you can get over the (not overwhelming) learning curve the first game is more rewarding, especially for base building.

Re: Reccomend me a strategy game, now!

I reviewed Supreme Commander 2 on Hexus a week or two ago... it's more reminiscent of C&C Generals than any other game I've ever played, and I would say it's definitely worth playing - some people will say it's a load crap, because they preferred SC1, but I think that's a bit unfair. Obviously I went a bit more in depth than that in the review though

Supreme Commander 1 is a bit less like C&C because it's more complex, but that's a good thing. Give both of them a try, see how you feel. They're quite different games, so you may well find one much more enjoyable than the other.

Re: Reccomend me a strategy game, now!

Sup com 1 + FA is brilliant, had them both since they came out out still played to this day. The sequel isn't a bad game in of itself, but it has gone backwards from the original in some of the areas that made it so good in the first place.

Re: Reccomend me a strategy game, now!

+1 for SC and FA. For me its the best RTS game I've ever played I used to be a total C&C freek but when SC came out its took the crown for me.

when I completed the objective on the first mission and instead of the level ending the map expanded and I had a huge hole in my defences made me fall in love with it. I still play it to this day!

Now that EA have successfully destroyed one of the best RTS franchises ever (c&c) to be made we need to see who is going to step up and make another decent RTS.

I haven’t played SC2 yet but I think I'm going to give it a blast even though I wont be able to make insanely huge army's and speed the game up to +10 so that the units take a min or so instead of 10 to cross the map.

I have recently got back in to SC, my rig didnt do it justice first time around. A totally different option is the total war games, Napoleon olays a bit quick for my tastes, but might work for others.
