Do you want 2 monitors in Games to actually work?

Knox's 3d thread http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-gaming...3d-gaming.html bought something up inside me... what I think I want more than 3D is for a twin monitor system to actually work properly in games for menu's and stuff.

Game on main screen.. all other boxes slid off to the smaller or lesser monitor.

I've seen Eve on multi monitors and DIRT on 6 of them with ATI Eyefinity.. but .. it's not actually what I think I want.

Ithink I want game menu's on another screen easily....

    what about you?

Re: Do you want 2 monitors in Games to actually work?

Are you talking about RTS type games here? Where there's a lot of "clicking" and "selecting"?

If that's what you mean then yeah, the game on one screen with nothing getting in the way and then all the menus and everything else on the other screen. That'd be brilliant .

I'm currently considering forking out for another 2 of my monitors and having a 3 screen setup which would just be perfect for FPS and Racing games, especially if I get the racing seat I've been building finished anytime soon..

I seem to remember that World In Conflict had a feature along those lines.

As it was pointed out at the time though, we're talking a minuscule percentage of the market here.

Frex do a small 'sim' meter with a touch screen that supposed to give live telemetry and menu screens etc for racing games. I'm assuming you mean similar to this but for any game???

I've got 2 monitors here, I game on one and have player lists, web windows and messengers on the other screen.

Can see it being the norm in a few years as more and more people have multi monitor setups.

Even as a laptop hooked up to an HD ready TV I can see it becoming more common

Quite a while back I used a small back-lit LCD screen modded into my case as scoreboard for Quake 3. Now that monitors are a whole deal smaller and cheaper I'm using a couple of screens to the same effect, so would love to see this feature implemented more in the future.

Re: Do you want 2 monitors in Games to actually work?

I wish they would add support to have the map on a different screen in battlefield games and RTSes (not that I really play them anymore). I don't know what else they could show. Maybe having steam chat and stuff on there might be nice but a bit redundant as I could just use windowed mode.

Re: Do you want 2 monitors in Games to actually work?

Yes I really would - for the vast majority of games it would make a huge difference.

There are so few that have done it right - SupCom is probably the best example when it comes to RTS games, as you could actually fight 2 different battles at the same time, on opposite sides of the map (or just watch say your home base while out kicking butt on the other side). To me this made the game much more immersive, albeit twice as complicated to keep up with.

Flight Sim X also does a good job of it albeit very fiddly to get setup with..

I see a big market for this kind of thing with FPS games - don't want your HUD in the way? chuck it on the other screen. Mini-map too small? onto the second screen. Or you can think of it as opening up new options for this kind of game..an FPS game where you can see to your sides as well as forwards? How about a horror game where you really do have eyes in the back of your head..etc

2+ monitors are now becoming the norm, and people have PCs to power them in games..so I think devs should take advantage of this, even if it is more complicated to both play and develop in most cases.

Assuming you're running the game fullscreen, when you move to the second window (out of the game window) does the game minimise?

I've got a similar setup at home, with Steam, stats, emails, etc in the second screen but there's no simple way to flick to the second screen (that I've found)

It does for me in most games yes - the only simple workaround is to run the game in window'd mode.

I find that you have to run like this if you want to be able to interact with your second window (eg in wow so you can flip out to thottbot/wowwiki etc), but you are able to "maximise" the game window while keeping it running in a window, so it's almost the same as fullscreen.

Downside is that you take an FPS hit but that's often worth it so you can get to MSN or whatever.

Yeah it does but its more just for me to be able to see what else is going on not to actually interact with it etc

Re: Do you want 2 monitors in Games to actually work?

I have a second computer running on my second monitor while gaming so I can get the web, do leveling calulations for oblivion on a spreadsheet while the game is active. Most games cannot handle being iconised so having a second computer can be invaluable as far as I am concerned.

For RTS games I thought i would be nice if one monitor could work as the display and lists of information on the other one. The problem is as it stands two monitors have the center over the plastic so are not very usable, monitors have to be of the same resolution to work right. A proper split screen would be far better inventory could be on the other display etc. Three monitors gets you a connect centre however the expense of have 3 indical monitors means its not going to happen for most. Most peoples second monitor is an old one, games should be written to take advantage of a second lower spec monitor.

Re: Do you want 2 monitors in Games to actually work?

The main issue I have is games not supporting multiple graphic cards that are not running crossfire or SLI.

I use three monitors. The center one is a 22" widescreen running on a 4870 with two 19 4:3 monitors running as side monitors. The two 19's run of a separate ati 3450. I've managed to get grid running over all three using softth but games like sup com seem to want to see the dual monitors on a single card.

It does make for a good gaming experience in grid though
