Test Drive Unlimited 2 early hands on/studio visit

A friend of mine recently got to head out to Eden's studio in France to see how Test Drive Unlimited 2 is coming along. TDU (1) was one of the better car collection/driving games on the PC, and had quite a social following on consoles, it sounds like they've really listened to fans for the sequel. Not a lot of pictures, but a lot of text in this write up:

Wow where to start. On the 2nd June 2010 me, myself and I was invited to attend a very special meeting and have a playtest of Test Drive Unlimited 2 (TDU2) at its home; Eden Games. The below will describe a lot about my experience and also what I saw, heard and did not see, well pretended not to see anyway.

Sounds like a great day out and TDU2 sounds like it is very promising. I loved TDU so will certainly be buying this when it comes out on PC.

I never got into TDU myself, although it was an awesome game.

The driving just felt a bit too arcade-y for my liking... I know it's not meant to be a simulator as such, but it was just a touch too far over the boundary.

Re: Test Drive Unlimited 2 early hands on/studio visit

Dying for this game. It's one of only several games I care about and am interested in, for the next year or two.

I can't help but think the Xbox360 is going to hold it back though It looks pretty at first sight, but I bet there is a short viewing distance and loads of blurring and stuff. Maybe on the PC version they will let us crank stuff.

I loved the first game. My only gripe was that it became a bit of a grind to save up enough money to buy all the stuff I wanted. I suppose it wouldn't be so bad if you played the game for weeks or months, but I found the racing to be a bit tedious and the missions to be a bit dull, and the driving itself just wasn't good enough or realistic enough for me to want to just cruise around for long periods.

I loved the concept of the game though, so I'm thinking that if they improve those things a bit, and they have tidied up the driving physics, it could end up being a really great game. I will almost certainly buy it anyway.

this on so many levels! TDU has to be up there with some of the older Need For Speeds in terms of greatness
