+1 for Kingpin. it was pretty tricky to start with.

I LOVED rogue squadron 3d, but could never get it working post XP.

Lucas arts missing a trick by not releasing a decent star wars 3d flying game, IMHO.

    Osmos is good.

Oooh, oooh, and Shogo: MAD if you can get it.

    Re: Low spec fun games.

Check out "abandonware" on the internet. There are various sites which host old mostly DOS based games which are old enough that they have been abandoned by their publishers and developers, so you can now just download them for free.

You then install "DosBox" on your PC and you can play any of these old games pretty easily. If you like it, there are a couple of entire decades worth of great games. Here's a list of stuff that comes to mind.

    None DOS (not abandonware either)
    Age of Wonders
Age of Wonders 2 (maybe, not sure how powerful your PC is)
    Baldur's Gate 1 / 2 / ToB
System Shock 2 (best FPS ever in my opinion)
Minions of Mirth -- an independent MMORPG that you can also play offline. It's about 5 years old or something now and it was never super high tech even at the time, so it should hopefully run ok. It's a nice game.

    Neverwinter Nights

C&C Tiberian Sun -- the best RTS ever made in my not so humble opinion. It is also now completely free and you can download it from EA's website.

    Xwing Vs Tiefighter
    Earth 2150

DOS era / Abandonware (some of these might not be abandonware but most are)
Slipstream 5000 -- great racing game, one of my favourites.
    Atomic Bomberman -- fun!
    Dune
    Dune 2
Eye of the Beholder (series, 3 games) -- second one was my favourite
Police Quest (series, 4 of them) -- some of them were remade with better graphics in the 90's.
    Monkey Island (series)
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
    Space Quest (series)
Leisure Suit Larry (series, also had some higher quality VGA remakes)
Prince of Persia (1 and 2, both really good)
UFO / Xcom -- epic games
    Castles
    Alone in the Dark
    Frontier Elite 2
    Lands of Lore
    Lemmings 2: The Tribes
    Worms World Party
    Civilization 2
Duke Nukem 3D -- one of the best shooters ever made
    Warcraft 2

Abandonware's still illegal though, in the sense that it's usually used

Oh well if so, you might wanna try buying them on ebay. You can get entire collections of that stuff for next to nothing.

+1 Timeless classic, still the most frightening game I have ever played. Nothing else gives you the same sense of... isolation? paranoia? Very good game.

Two more classics to add then, same engine and same developer. Thief and Thief 2, brilliant stories, sarcastic and cynical (but thoroughly likeable) protagonist. Also literally hundreds of fan missions to try once you've finished the campaign, some of which are of excellent quality.

Will the thief games work on the spec of the netbook? I really enjoyed those games.

Should do, I think I managed to get thief 2 working on my eee (was a while back). Worked quite nicely too, but I seem to remember having to alter config files due to the eee's unusual resolution.

    Re: Low spec fun games.

Got back in to Diablo2 again recently ... damnit .... spending too many hours yet again on this bloody game. For some reason they just got the balance so bloody right...

Torchlight of course is D2 plus better graphics but minus multiplayer. If you are on your own, get Torchlight.

Why oh why is Diablo 2 still so expensive to buy? £7 for the game, plus £7 for LOD (which is a requirement), so £14 for a 9 year old game.... crazy. It's like the Q6600 of games.
