So, Hexus has been bugging me with a banner telling me i haven't posted in a while so i thought why not make a thread on something i've enjoyed for the past month or so seeing as it's not really been brought up at all (one mention a few months ago and the one before that is a preview).
Basically for all those in the know, it's a remake of the "Defense of the Ancients" game type/mod for Warcraft 3 similar to the other recently released game "Heroes of Newerth".
For those that don't know, it's been described as a "Multiplayer Online Battle Arena", effectively you have a symmetrical map with two teams of 5 (or 3) players who each control a "Hero/Champion" and the overall objectively is to make it to the enemy's base and destroy it. Stopping you from doing this are Turrets which you need to destroy and "minions" who are weaker NPCs for each team also pushing towards either bases.
Overall i find it a lot of fun due to the variety in champion play styles and the various different tactics you can implement. The best part of the game is that it's completely free to play although there is a micro-transaction system in place should you wish to use it. Now whilst i normally dislike such systems (since they generally ask you to pay money in order to get a heads up over your opponents), LoL is different. The only things they "charge" you for are Champion skins (purely aesthetic) or actual Champions (which isn't as bad as it sounds, i'll explain in the next paragraph).
So basically there's a roster of 40-50 champions which start out as being locked, each week there are also a set of free champions (~7-9) to use which usually consist of a balanced team (Melee DPS, Ranged DPS, Tank, Support etc.) for you to play with. Each game you play earns you in game currency known as "Influence Points" and this IP can be used to "purchase" characters once you have accrued enough (and the rates are fairly good as well). Where buying champions and skins with "real" money comes into play is in the form of "Riot Points" which allow you access to champions if you can't be bothered to play enough to redeem them via IP. Overall i think it's a rather good system meaning that those who don't want to spend anything on the game can do so and the only thing they miss out on are skins (which serve no purpose other than to look awesome).
Anyone interested in the game can sign up Here (American Servers) or Here (European Servers). You can check out the general FAQ here.
So anyhow, enough selling the game. Is anyone actually playing it? I'm currently Level 30 on the American servers since there seemed to be issues with GOA and the European servers at the time. However now Riot (the original developer) have taken over, things seem to be smoother and i've got a Level 12/13 account on the Euro servers too. If anyone wants to add me or even play a game, my username is "SethAnub1s". Tell me which servers you're on though since i don't go on my European account too much since i'm trying to complete another Rune set for my American account.
