First time trying the heavyweight... Crysis/warhead, but weird fps.

    Hey,

Finally got around to, and got a system spec good enough to try crysis and crysis warhead for the first time But im getting poor performance, or at least i think i am.
Im playing both games at these levels:
    Direct X 9
    1024x768
    8Xaa
    Fullscreen
    High Details

However im only getting 30-40 fps. Is this normal for spec like this ?
The only reasone im posting is because i found loads of youtube vids of people playing
both games at ridiculously high levels like 1900x1200, DX10 8Xaa Ultra high / Enthusiast
and they seem to be easly getting 40/45/50 fps, on almost identical specification to mine.

Any advice would be wellcome, thx.

That fps sounds about right, crysis is very hard work on your GPU(s).

Re: First time trying the heavyweight... Crysis/warhead, but weird fps.

Sounds a bit low for the resolution, not by much though, try tweaking it a bit. http://www.tweakguides.com/Crysis_1.html is a great guide(you probably go ahead and skip the first couple of pages). Used it myself. Along with getting latest drivers etc.

Another thing, I've heard a lot of people report and seen it myself that in some cases Very high/enthusiast works far better than high in terms of FPS. Quirk of the engine I guess.

Why don't you run in DX10 and at your highest resolution and see what you get ?

Re: First time trying the heavyweight... Crysis/warhead, but weird fps.

cheers for the advice, & for the tweak guide aswell.
oddly the fps improved by 10 fps on dx10 on warhead, and dropped 25/30 fps in dx10 on crysis.
crysis is quite low fps on anything higher than 1024x768, and for some reasone warhead just won't allow any other rez other than 1024x768, eg if i set it to another rez, it just either auto resets back to 1024x768 or it chops half the screen off.
I was really hoping that a rig like this would perform much better.

So how are people even managing to play at 1920x1200 with everything maxed out lol.

    example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0IVzD1JDEA

^^ similar spec to mine, yet he gets smooth play at a ridiculously high rez like 1920x1200

Whats the maximum resolution your monitor supports and are you using the latest drivers ?

Monitor max rez is 1600x1200/75Hz, which is slightly lower, but 1600x1200 would have been enough for me. The monitor is a CRT, not a plasma or lcd, could that be affecting things ?
    Driver: 10.5

edit: the highest resolution i tried was 1400x1050, unplayable.

Re: First time trying the heavyweight... Crysis/warhead, but weird fps.

You can force resolution via the shortcut or setting files, it's in the guide somewhere. I had to do that one too, wouldn't me change the res either. Also do you have the latest crysis patches? They bring some pretty big performance gains, although I would have thought Warhead would have at least most of them included.

Having stroked my chin a bit more I'd definitely say there's a problem somewhere, launch day your framerates wouldn't have been to remarkable, but with an updated version and your rig, it should be performing a lot better tbh.

I played warhead on my current rig, on VH/H mix with most of the tweaks in that guide @ 1680x1050 and it was perfectly playable.

Some googling suggests you're not the only with 5-series crossfire and not brilliant performance, try running without it. If nothing else it will narrow it down to a crossfire problem.

Wouldn't say your CRT is affecting anything other than perhaps it detecting the resolution wrong. Which shouldn't affect performance.

This. I've never seen the point of AA at higher resolutions anyway.

Fps does seem a little low, I seem to recall running these games on a 3Ghz C2D with an 8800GS and getting in the 30s? DX9, no AA, med/high settings with a few tweaks (1400*900 i think)

Re: First time trying the heavyweight... Crysis/warhead, but weird fps.

Thx for all the info guys, much appreciated.

Ok, well i've tried as many different combinations of detail levels and resolution's and direct x levels as i can think of. The conclusion i'v found, is that scaling doesn't seem to apply that much to these two games, (mainly warhead) especially when they are being played on a crossfire setup. What i mean is, with most games if you pull down the detailing and rez, fps goes up, and if you put up the rez and detail levels, the fps generally goes down. Well not with these two games. If i run them at a low rez like 1024x768 that apparently dose not automatically mean i'll get a boost in fps, and visa versa. The reason for this i think is because of the crossfire setup. Crossfire as far as i can see, seems to perform much much better at higher resolutions, and very poorly at lower end resolutions like 1024x768, why this is, i have no idea, but from all the testing i've been trying, it seems to be the case. Either that or it's just a quirk of the 5000 series cards.

Ok, well i've tried as many different combinations of detail levels and resolution's and direct x levels as i can think of. The conclusion i'v found, is that scaling doesn't seem to apply that much to these two games, (mainly warhead) especially when they are being played on a crossfire setup. my 5870 struggles on warhead if i enable AA as soon as i switch it of i get comfortable fps at 1920 x1080 on enthusiast settings if i put any AA on my fps goes to about 15 without 35-50fps
