If you were buying a console today and only want one which would you go for and why? This is a genuine question as I'm deciding which to get.

forget what anyone says its about what games you want to play
PS3 is the better media centre, Xbox 360 is the better games machine, not because its faster or better looking but because it has a larger game selection.
Personally im bias towards the PS3 as ive owned one since release and can't fault it but at the end of the day it depends on the games available for each system and which you think ya will play.
I was considering buying a PS3, but there are absolutely no games out for it that make the console worth shelling out for, so for me it would just be a blu-ray player. Personally I would go for the X-box, from a gamers perspective it has infinitely more choice.
GOW 3!
and erm, all the good ps3 games are on way to xbox now, but then again i'm biased too
Cousin has both, so i have messed around a fair bit on a ps3. but prefer the Xbox overall
Lol, i'd say PS3. For exactly the same reasons you put. Which is why it's down to personal preference.
Best advice is what games do you want to play, then choose around it. I do have both a 360 and a PS3. But tend to play PS3 mostly.

To be honest game integration within the whole console is better too with the whole party and game invite system, etc (ok, that's part of a premium element called Xbox Live but its cheap and still miles better than what the PS3 has)
Also the PS3 has lower FPS in a lot of games, which got on my nerves when I used to play MW2 - smoke grenades during some situations really made it hard to aim Eurogamer does good comparisons.
I love both my 360 and PS3 but I'm steering towards selling the PS3 because I have more mates on XBL. And playing online with friends is what I only really do these days on a console lol.
ALSO - Kinect!
Also find out which of the 2 control pads you like, that will help your decision and whether kinect or move is worth it for you
This is a pretty important point, as it is a lot more fun playing with/against people you know, rather than XBL randoms. So again, its the games you'd like and the systems that mates have really that should be your deciding factors. Oh and if you want bluray. And...
Ah, you might as well flip a coin
isn't this just, like, the same argument that's been running for years, but, like, on the slimfast versions?
kalniel says it all really
Like whats been said I suppose what everyone else you know has got, everyone I know has an Xbox but only one person I know has a PS3.
Im guessing his online sessions arn't quite the same as ours...
But only if choosing was that simple!
All my friends have Xbox. Only 2 have PS3, and they have Xbox too. The ones with PS3 struggle to find something to play that isn't also available for Xbox. So they end using it for Blurays.
I personally went for Xbox and a dedicated Bluray player. I use the Xbox as a media center too. Even the menu experience if far superior on Xbox. The controller on Xbox is far superior. I honestly could not get on with the PS3 controller flappy, non-tactile thumb sticks.
The Xbox slim now has 250GB HDD and Wireless N built in and is Natal ready. Oh, and Natal, Sorry Kintec, is another good reason. A state of the art visual scanning device that you can shack your thang in front of or a plastic thing you hold in your hand that has a ping-pong ball stuck on the top
Now, I imagine I will get some flames, but not many coz everyone on Hexus forums appreciate others opinions are their own. But after working as a games tester for a particularly large games company I've had much experience with both. I was really really glad I chose Xbox.
Let us know which way you went
