    What the...?

Okay, plain and simple - games that you hadn't realy heard of, or knew anything about, but when you saw/played them you were, "What the....what is this?" Or, "Woah....this is cool!"

Anyone recall MoonStone? Got to love the gore.

    Or Barbarian -

    And then Dragon's Breath

    More to come.

    Anyone else?

    yep, the first one.

I remember Barbarian really well. I went out and bought it on tape for the Commodore 64. One side of the tape was just training in the wilderness. If you loaded the 2nd side you were in Draks dungeon fighting (There was a great decapitation move on that game, you pressed fire and pushed joystick opposite way you are facing and he kinda jumped and spun round lashing his sword out. If you timed it right took the opponents head clean off and the goblin walked on the screen kicked the head out the arena, laughed and dragged the corpse off) The Barbarian pic above is from the Commodore 64 version and thats actually the training side of the tape. The other side as well as being a dungeon screen has Drak sat in the background.

Psygnosis also done a game called Barbarian (Initially available on the Amiga) It had all the controls for actions accross the bottom of the screen (left, right, attack, up ladder etc all controlled by the mouse making it a point and click type thing) It was nowhere near as good as Palaces Barbarian.

Barbarian 2 from Palace (Follow up to one above) actually called Dungeon of Drak was a side scroller type affair with loads of monsters and mutant chickens (I'm serious here ! ) This time there was an option between 2 characters, the Barbarian from the 1st one who had a huge double bladed axe or a Woman who was faster but not as powerful with a broadsword (Kind of Red Sonja / Conan type feel to it). You had to collect 3 objects on each level before moving on to the next because if you didn't you couldnt find Draks room on the end of the 4th level. Another amusing fact here is that WOLF from the TV show Gladiators a good few years ago was actually the guy dressed as the Barbarian on the front of the case cover !!

I remember Moonstone. It was absolutely quality. I even managed to get an Amiga emulator and run it on my PC a few years back.

Am I the only one who used to trade throwing knives (totally worthless) for extra lives with the druids? Naughty me....

moonstone was amazing - how scary were those frikkin tree monsters that just came outta the ground and dragged you in

Virus on the Amiga was one where I was "What the..." I still dont know what the point in it was, just that you could fly like a bat outta hell, and you could make the water ripple..maybe

Head Over Heals on the Amstrad 8256...greenscreen...bloody amazing...

Immortal on the MegaDrive (I think).

Damn you Barbarian and your decapitation move. My mate would just stab me in the guts every time I tried it (which I did, over and over) until I died...but did I learn, did I bollocks.

Oh, and something beginning with X on the Commodore 16, which involved a R-Type fly through the tunnels on the first level, and a cool 3D fly between the poles on the second level....never completed it though, it was impossible...

The only game with an X I can think of was X-Out for the Amiga. Or Xenon 2 Megablast

    some more screenies for moonstone

    http://www.mobygames.com/game/shots/p,2/gameId,2702/

I wonder if any1 has made an amiga emulator for symbian or pocket pc, this kind of game would be great on a PDA or phone for those boring days at work or whatever.
