Rage on i{Phone,Pad}
...and always has been. Amazing nonetheless though - hopefully android eventually too when he feels the platform has moved on enough.
Seeing as the engine is to be used on all sorts of bethesda games it could mean a lot for mobile gaming.
I agree that Carmack is a good programmer, but he's no game designer and iD's latest catalogue has left a lot to be desired in terms of actual gameplay. And yet another FPS game?
If the new iD engine works on iPhone and people can be bothered to develop for it, then I'd be interested. At the moment, Unreal Engine 3 is a few miles ahead at the moment, will be interesting if iD can compete in a mobile game engine market.
I get that - aside from the FPS part cos me, I love 'em. Rage looks good though.
UE3 is miles ahead? How so? Also remember the iD engine is not going to be licenced - it's in-house only but (and it's a big one) the publisher than owns the house has a lot of good ip to play with.
In terms of multi-platform compatibility, Epic did a demo of their engine this year on iPhone with Touch interface and you can find most of the code in the freely available UDK.
I thought iD was still independent. If they were bought out I prolly didn't pay attention because this is iD and I tend to ignore what they do most of the time now x_x
There's not alot out there on UE3 on iPhone, as far as I can tell, APple picked a really crap version of OpenGL to implement so they're mostly working around limitations, such as texturing. At least this is what CNET say but this kind of goes against what I know of the Unreal Engine myself as I work with it. It has it's own occlusion system in the engine. If these rely ont he video card then maybe that could be a problem.
Multi-platform development is a minefield x_x Personally I say people should stick to one platform and make the best of that platform rather than a bland experience all-round.
At the end of the day, most of this is just showing off. If UE3 does become licensable for iPhone then that WILL be exciting. Unless Apple bans it in it's usual uncompetitive practices.
TES 5 in iD tech 5 pl0x.

for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.
Hang on a second....
But Mr Carmack hasnt been involved with a great game since doom. Yes, you can argue that quake was a classic game, but it was still never a huge mainstream success. Since then, he's done lots of 'note', but no great games.
People still talk of doom, only the online addicts still talk of quake. No-one still talks of quake2/3/doom3 etc.

I still cite Q4 as a great game, Q2 as a masterpiece of design and Q3 as too fast to play until I'e had 3 gallons of coffee..
ALL great engines. Thats Carmack's bag. Programming and Engines.
Not the gaming principle, but the power behind it.
and HALF LIFE, and therefore SOURCE, and therefore COUNTER STRIKE would not exist without his engine.

John Carmack is only responsible for iD Games. While some companies can inspire others, that is no reason to say such games would NEVER be made. Because that is a huge crock of ... something.
If any game I work on is going to be attributed to that big-head, then I might as well quit the industry now.
Personally I attribute games to the people that actually make them. Richard Garriot is responsible for making Tabula Rasa the failure it is etc.
What? No crowbar?

Whilst id games havent pushed the gameplay boundaries in a long long time the engines are always very impressive.
I still remember getting hold of the doom 3 alpha and being amazed at how awesome it looked compared to everything else out there.
With id now owned by bethseda and if bethseda are going to use the engine in other things then it could mean a very very impressive next elderscrolls game
