Running games in a window

I've started playing some of the Older games in my collection recently (Age of Empires 2, Stronghold, etc) but the resolution's only tend to support up to 1280, and I'd much rather have it running in a window.

So far I've tried the -w command in the targetline, as well as the ALT+ENTER but neither seem to work.

Any ideas?

i take it there isn't the option to 'run in window' in the options menu in the game?

It's per-game, most won't support it. On rare occasion, third party hacks work (e.g. starcraft)

Haha, not that I can find Atleast I hope not....

I've had some success with the DX Windower before. It only works with DirectX apps/games, but as long as the game works fine in full screen, it should be good with this.

Ooh, I wonder if that supports DirectDraw 2D apps... could mean a way to run Red Alert okay on Windows 7 x64

May give it a go, it's more so for games that don't have the steam overlay/are casual that I can browse and play Hate minimising all the time for steam people.

Kinda works, there's a window that's running, but everything in it is black =/

If the game does not take to much power why not run it on a VM in windows 7 XP mode?

You know you can add the Steam overlay to non-Steam games, right? Add the game launcher to Steam, and run it from there (not the normal icon).

Yeah, it just refuses to work with some games (only a few mind). Do it with all my games
