So I've commandered me a PS3, what next?

My girlfriend was kind enough to source me a PS3 that her cousin no longer uses (read: he's doing too little work and has had it confiscated) and unfortunately there are no games provided. I'm looking at getting my own Slim one day

I've got a couple of questions:

Firstly, the obvious - what games do I get? They need to be cheap - I'd like to get perhaps 2 or 3 that are a decent length to play through. Doesn't matter how old they are, I've never owned a next gen console so anything goes. I've got a few recent games like Oblivion (not so recent), Fallout 3, Mirrors Edge, Assassin's Creed, etc on PC so no point paying twice.

Second, it's an old PS3, the one that doesn't support PS2 games. How easy is it to swap out the hard drives on the old models? I want to get a cheap 320GB or something. And is the data/account transferable if I get a Slim further down the line?

And third, I've got a PC monitor that's got a native res of 1620x1050 or whatever it is - the one that's got a vertical pixel count slightly less than full 1080 HD. Does the PS3 support that resolution or is it only "standard" HD? I'm going to connect it up using HDMI->DVI.

Games I'm looking at to get started are:

    Red Dead Redemption
    Demon's Souls
    GTA IV
    Metal Gear Solid
    Little Big Planet
Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction
    WipeOut HD
GT Prologue or GT5 obviously when it's out
Anything that's a bit kooky, hidden gems like ICO.

Oh, no FPSs please, I'm a WASD guy

Re: So I've commandered me a PS3, what next?

Changing the hard drive is really easy, go for it. Couple of screws, that's about it. Much easier than cracking open a PC case imo.

    As for other games:

Infamous is worth a go, only £10 used.

Saints Row 2... if you enjoyed GTA:SA and thought GTA:IV was underwhelming (me!), you can't go too far wrong with SR2. It's around £10 I think on the PS3, the PC port is absolutely shocking, don't touch it with a bargepole.

Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty, then A Crack in Time once you're finished with the first one.

Uncharted is worth a try, first one is around £12 online... okay, it's a bit of an FPS, but much less so than GTA IV/Red Dead Redemption.

Reluctant to suggest any others... GTA IV would be much better on the PC, although spec might struggle a little - hard to say. Prototype is a great game, but again, might as well get it for PC. So much cheaper, 9 times out of 10 - GTA IV £5 on steam for example. As you can probably see, I tend to avoid PS3 games where possible, only buy them when I can't get them for PC.

Only exclusion are sports games - football games just don't feel right on the PC.

    Hi,

The games you listed are very good.

Demon Souls is bloody hard but brilliant rpg!
Metal Gear solid I really enjoyed but you gotta be a fan of the series. (alot of cut scenes)
You can get GT prologue for £10 pre-owned.
    Uncharted/Uncharted 2 are a definite
LBP is good but needs alot of time before you start making anything decent (plenty of good homemade levels to d'load.
Street Fighter 4 if you like beat em up's
God Of War 3 is a must!
You mentioned Assassins Creed but what about no.2 (much better imo)
Batman: Arkham Asylum is pretty good.
    Dead Space is good
Heavy Rain has an awesome story and is a very unique game.
    Resident Evil 5 is ok
    Motorstorm Pacific rift is good
Echochrome does my head in (in a good way)
    inFAMOUS is good.
    Really enjoyed Condemned 2 ...Brutal

PS3's Hard drives are easy to replace, you can backup your current setup with an external or USB drive, then it's a case of uncrewing 1 screw and sliding the HD out then formatting the new one, once you've set up an account it's just a case of logging back in with your details, very easily transferrable.
As for your monitor as long as it's HDCP then it'll work fine although probably at 720p, which most games play at anyway.

Re: So I've commandered me a PS3, what next?

Ah bum, I forgot about the HDCP compliancy rubbish Might have to see about getting a monitor upgrade then - worth trying first! Or another monitor.. I've always wanted a dual setup

Yeah my list of games is basically the ones I like the look of out of the top rated lists. I'd rather focus on platform exclusives or at least games that are "designed" for consoles. Stuff like Uncharted is fine, when I say I don't want FPSs I mean stuff that requires twitchy reactions like CoD.

Unless there's a way to use VGA or something?

Allegedly there is a VGA option, according to a post in my PS3 thread a couple days ago, which had a few links to eBay.

No idea if they actually work though.

Component cable + Component to VGA adapter? Should be good as both are analogue signals

Yeah, same here. God of War 3 might be worth a look as well. Still haven't tried it (got more than enough on my plate and it's over £20), but it's meant to be excellent.

Uncharted 2. For me, this is the closest to 10/10 I've played on a console.

Re: So I've commandered me a PS3, what next?

Cheers for heads up about the other thread, we've got an analogue TV in our house at uni (and indeed at home) so I'll get one of these anyway:

    http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-3-...ref=pd_cp_vg_1

As for monitors, I'm tempted by that Sammy you've got £150 delivered on Play is tempting and I'd have a 22" and a 23" sitting on my desk looking cool. Either that or I sell the LG I've got now (http://www.lg.com/uk/it-products/mon...or-W2252TQ.jsp) and "upgrade". I know which option I prefer, but it's going to have to wait till I see how much cash I have in my bank account and when the student loan comes in - know what I'm saying

My speakers can take either 3.5mm or RCA so we'll work on that one...

Would be nice to just get a normal AV cable, split the RCA -> VGA into the monitor and then the other RCA into the speakers but that seems far too simple.

Re: So I've commandered me a PS3, what next?

I'm going for a Samsung P2270HD, stick the PS3 and PC into it and hopefully pass the audio out again into my Creative T40s. Was hoping for the Samsung SM2333HD, was planning to put both onto HDMI and then pass the audio back out again, but only place with a decent deal was eBuyer and their stock was imaginary, so gave up on that plan.

I love the 2343BW, but it just doesn't have enough inputs this time around.

And yeah, as ever, cash is always the issue. Especially since I have to pay my accomodation about a month before I *might* get some money off student finance

Re: So I've commandered me a PS3, what next?

I figure so long as it's HDCP compliant I can route the video through that monitor and dual-screen when i'm not gaming. Audio is going to be a tricky one, *but* I think I can cope with it (optical) going through my desktop and back out again.

But at least there's a TV in my student "residence" so I'll hook it up to that.

Really looking forward to some console action again, had nothing since the ole PS2 and my PC is getting on a bit - though it'll still thrash out CoD4 at more or less full rez. In the end it's back down to new graphics card or not and since I've got the console option now, it seems stupid not to take that instead.
