    GTA4 questions

    Hello,

I am looking at getting a copy of GTA4, but have a few questions and would appreciate your input before I purchase the game.

Firstly, what applications would I have to install to be able to play the game? Which of these would be running in the background, and do any of them remain open even when not playing the game? With the last GTA game I purchased, San Andreas, things were much easier and I could simply launch the game and play. Is it possible to install the game, and the "surplus" junk applications on different drives? Also, is it possible to play and save games without being connected to the internet?

Secondly, whilst the graphics, game engine, and features have all generally been improved; what are your thoughts on the actually game play and story line? With San Andreas, there was a vast playable area and the story line was very engaging. That, and there were many more things to do other than follow the main plot.

    Thanks!

    Odai.

    Re: GTA4 questions

I've just started playing it through again, so here's my opinion:

-I've got the steam version, but it is a GfWl title so needs the MS cr@p as well.

-after I've got my new gpu the game became playable...before that I hated it. I would add that it looks much better than the PS3 version, and it has less graphical bugs too (less means that it still has a lot of issues, though on ps3 the road often disappeared under my car when I was driving "too" fast.

-I like the gameplay and the story, though the characters and situations were much funnier in the previous ones...furthermore the protagonist in this is not as sympathetic for me as the old ones...but still, the game is quite engaging...

-I would not spend more than 9 pounds on it.

    hope this helps

    Re: GTA4 questions

Additional apps required are Games for Windows Live and Rockstar Social Club. If you want to play GTA, you start Rockstar Social Club, then launch the game. AFAIK you can't close Social Club until you've finished playing and quit.

I'm not sure whether it's possible to install the apps on other drives. Social Club, it's a possibility. GfWL I would say almost certainly not. They aren't big though, pretty small applications. You don't need a constant internet connection.

As for GTA:SA, this is a completely different game in my eyes. There's a lot less to do, overall. No planes, no driving schools, no car modifications, no trains, no wide open spaces, no gang wars... you get the idea. Foods and clothes are pretty irrelevant now as well. The girlfriend stuff has been expanded, so you spend half your time taking friends out for meals/shows/drinks, which is unbelievably boring. Characters aren't as good either, far less humour overall, radio stations are much worse.

All-in-all, it's still a good game, but I don't think it's anywhere near as fun as San Andreas. It's been on Steam for £5 a few times, I would definitely wait until it's that cheap. The expansions are probably more fun than the main game (Episodes from Liberty City) but they're pretty expensive still so I'd hold off.

Others did the apps stuff. As for the game itself...:

I have played every GTA game to be released, and my favourite of all is still San Andreas. The reason is that all the games are identical... but San Andreas had many fun gadgets as a bonus. Flying around in a jet pack or a harrier makes it that step above the others.

GTA4 misses out on the planes and jetpack, although it still has choppers. One way it does improve though is that the graphics are quite a big improvement. It's nice looking but the most impressive thing to me is the unbelievable amount of detail! There are leaves in the gutters at the side of the road, holes in the road, some have been hastily patched over by a dollop of tarmac just like real life. They made it look far less like a game world with pristine streets and stuff, and far more like a real world. Graphically it really did impress me.

The gameplay itself though is STILL unchanged, which bugs me. I have been craving some updates to that for a long time and it just doesn't come. San Andreas showed some promise with that neighbourhood wars thing they had. It ended up being a bit worthless, but there is a concept there which could be fantastic if they developed it some more. I really want to see them do that in future games, because the endless list of missions (AKA: Chores), driving from A to B to kill C is really getting old now.

The only other thing I have to say is that there are two downloadable expansions for GTA 4, and they are both very good, better than the original game infact. The best of the two is called Ballad of Gay Tony which I just played recently. It was brilliant! It's the best I've played, definitely up there with San Andreas. It's the same old gameplay as always, but they just took it as far as they could possibly take it. They did all the things I felt they messed up with on the original. So they filled it with fun chopper missions, great action packed shooting missions, and far more elaborate and exciting missions. One memorable one you jump out of a chopper and parachute on to a building, then do a full assault on everyone in the building, and then just as reinforcements arrive, you dive out of the window and parachute again on to a waiting car which drives you to safety. Great game.
