Mass Effect 2 problem - please help!

Been wanting to play this all weekend, and finally found some time for it. BUT, when I start up the game via steam, I just get this "Connecting to Cerberus network..." message and I can't do anything in the in-game GUI. I can't select to resume my game, or even exit the game. WTF? Why should a problem with these stupid Cerberus network servers stop me playing the game. I'm absolutely fuming.

Anyone know how to fix this problem? I'm really really angry about this. My small amout of spare time is ticking away rapidly.

Make sure the firewall isn't blocking it or something?

Also, is there no option for a product key to be entered?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Restart steam in offline mode or use a no-cd patch. Usually, if it fails to connect, a message pops up saying so and goes back to main menu to start/resume game.

Yeah, entered the product key a few days ago when I first started playing it. Doesn't seem to be a firewall problem, and it was working fine a few days ago.

Re: Mass Effect 2 problem - please help!

Restarted in offline mode, and the stupid connection to cerberus finally timed out. I can actually now play the game.

Seriously, wtf. Who designed the interface to be like this?! I thought the cerberus network thing was just a downloadable content mechanism, not some kind of DRM check.

Anyway, thanks for your help guys.

It's a bit of both AFAIK, one issue can be not using the same details for your bioware account as you do for your steam account. If you haven't setup a Bioware account at all, I suspect that may be the reason for the timeouts.
