Exclamation The boy who stole Half Life

A fascinating read - especially in light of current events:

Interesting read - and yeah, I think he comes across as pretty believable.

Wonder what Newell would have done to him if he'd actually turned up in the US!

The whole thing was for personal gain, he got the source to show off to everyone, then wrote the email to see if he could get a job. I'm sure he is sorry now, but only because he got caught

Yeah, I read that yesterday. I do believe he is genuinely sorry about what he has done. Very interesting read that had me hooked

I can't believe the number of commentors calling Valve 'evil' for trying to get the guy arrested, why such a backlash?

The guy hacked in, stole data & it got released all over the net prior to the games release. I don't for one minute think the '$250million dollars cost' is anything but spin but come on! Just cos he was young means nothing, it's not like he was 4years old & accidently did all of this from his speak-n-spell.

if he had done it from his speak and spell i'd be impressed.

Does look a bit like he's just after fame for it. I don't buy the remorse and the bit the made me laugh was he gave it to a guy who said he wouldn't give it to anyone else.

So he's smart enough to exploit valves servers spend weeks in there system steal there entire code, but then when his mate goes i promise i wont give it anyone he goes "oh ok sure"

I wish he had got to america and had been given a real harsh penalty because i cant see the increasing trend of games piracy changing as so very few people i know (and alot of people on here to) Seem to think not only is it aceptable it's there god given right. A Huge fine or prison sentence may change peoples view on the legality of it.

Why not bring back hanging too?

Personally I do believe he's remorseful - he did pay a price (albeit a lesser one than had the yanks got their hands on him) and we were all young and stupid at one point in our lives. Not that it's an excuse, and I do think he deserved everything he got. I'm surprised Valve let him on Steam though
