    Bulletsorm SP first impression

Once I got through the tortuous Windows Live DRM setup (Eventually had to call a very nice bloke in Dublin) I've been playing this for a couple days. Rig on left - all settings at high.

It appears to be a nostalgia fest with a complete lack of script, gorgeous massive landscapes, ridiculous wise-cracking dialogue and stupidly over sized weapons. If you think Serious Sam HD, with bits of Duke Nukem and nods to hundreds of other famous games you've played, you'd have it right. It comes across as a homage to game developers since 1990.

Because (despite?) that, it is a great way to spend an hour just blowing the hell out of hundreds of Mad Max extras and Godzilla-ish monsters in pretty landscapes. I haven't tried the MP yet but I doubt it's ever going to be a great game. Just too plain silly.

When it hits the discount shelves I would recommend it for anyone who remembers 90s. Top stuff.

    Re: Bulletsorm SP first impression

I finished the SP last weekend, really enjoyed it start to finish. The campaign is actually a decent size with other shooters clocking in at a lot less. Left wide open for a sequel, make sure you watch the end credits, you dont see anything but you hear plenty.

It reminded me of a DC comics character called LOBO for the main character. The main game itself, guns from the style of Gears of War and the locations actually reminded me of Enslaved Oddesy to the west. All games that I like, used to read and love LOBO!

    Re: Bulletsorm SP first impression

I thought the trailers/video reviews of this game did look fun - but that it might get boring/repetative fairly quickly. I guess it's too soon for either of you to judge that yet?

    Re: Bulletsorm SP first impression

I found that yeah the campaign was longer than most other shooters, but it didnt lose its pace at all. Not once did the novelty wear off doing the various kills, I found myself thinking about genius new ways to actually try and kill the enemies, these thoughts flowed naturally. When you move into an area that appears to be quiet I found myself scoping out environmental objects to take things out quickly if I got swarmed, this comes in handy when you come across the full on mutants nearer the end. You can either shoot them in the spores on their body to kill them, the easiest way though was to actually kick them into something environmental or shooting exploding barrels.

Best way to look at it, if you like the Gears of War games and their pacing then you will love Bulletstorm. Keeps you hooked start to finish.

Not yet. It's a bit like a farming friend one commented about his sheep.
(Always finding new and inventive ways of killing themselves.)
The visuals are gorgeous though, and dialogue very tongue-in-cheek. Had me LOLing at times. I'll keep you posted.

I've avoided all that nonsense by not registering the game with windows live. When windows live pops up at the start I just click the red x. I want to sell the game on so permanently associating it with my live ID would seem like a bad move!

    Re: Bulletsorm SP first impression

When I started mine up and games for windows came up I created an offline profile and away I went. Didnt have to register it at all, may pass my copy onto the friend that lives opposite me and actually get the PS3 version for the online as my lappy is nearly 2yrs old now and cant run everything in maximum detail.

My desktop PC blew the weekend due to water coming in through the socket it was in and now I cant use a PCIE graphics card without crashes now so thinking it has done something to the motherboard. Insurance wont pay out as the guttering came down in all the snow before Christmas and my landlord has yet to put it back up, due to the guttering not being up and water getting in I cant claim and I'm damned annoyed. So the Geforce 6100 onboard graphics wont cut it!

Now that must be vexing. Pretty frightnening having water come in through sockets as well I would have thought. All you can do is tell your stupid landlord you won't pay rent until it's fixed. That's what I would do.

    Re: Bulletsorm SP first impression

Its well worth getting Zak, its one of those fun games that is a no brainer when you play. Literally its one of those games you will fire up and play again in the future, just like Gears, you always end up going back to it. I havnt played the multiplayer on it as I'm into Bad Company 2 at the min.

Unfortunately Ciber, its an old 939 board with a 4600 X2 in it and a 9 series GeForce card, it ran most stuff fine. I have put an old spare board in tonight but it is a VIA chipset and aint that great, only has 2 DDR slots also, but its been sitting for that long now its not working properly anymore I have also found out that my processor is now on the fritz and my primary hard disc has loads of bad sectors also, all down to the water, my power supply isnt putting out a steady flow on a few of the rails also.

It was scary when it happened, power kept tripping so we had to turn everything off on the main box and turn on one by one to see what was tripping. Then I heard a weird gurgling fizzing sound and worked out where it was coming from. Thank god one of my kids didnt go to use the spare socket on the 4 way trailer to charge their DS or phones up.

So now its onboard graphics, 2Gb ram, a single core 3500. I have it just setup as a media server and it seems to be stable on Windows 7 32 Bit. Wife has stopped me from calling the landlord and saying exactly what you suggested, but our tenancy is now a rolling month by month and we dont want to upset him and have to move again ove a PC!

Either way, my lappy ran Bulletstorm on medium settings just fine and I got through the campaign, just got to get around £500 together so I can setup a half decent new rig. Should be achievable by about July as we are going on holiday end April and funds are going into that at the moment.

    Re: Bulletsorm SP first impression

Nearly reached the end of the SP campaign, and have to admit that I just kept on playing (much to the annoyance of the other half) because I wanted to see what happened next.

The game is a very good mindless shooter. It's not BF or HL, but it's very good nonetheless. I agree with Ferral in that I can see myself going back to it and thinking how I could do each scene more imaginatively. For eaxmple in one section, when under a time limit, I ran through running and gunning with the power drill (Think railgun). Turns out, I had more time than that, there were a number of permutations I didn't try.
The top tip seems to be that if there are a number of power cables, cacti or red barrells around, they're generally there for a reason.

If you're on a tight budget, wait for BF3. If you have spare cash, get it. I LOLd when playing. How many other games can say that ?

EDIT: Coarse language features heavily. Play with the door closed if you have kids.

Not just the computer, you've got water coming into your home? I think you've got a right to have that fixed immediately. TBH It's quite difficult to get rid of a tenant so if you refuse to pay due to maintenance issues you can't just get booted out. Just the threat of non payment should get a landlord moving.
