Good games for a low-ish powered portable? Free or cheap if possible!

Just got my new portable & know it won't run much so I'm looking for decentish titles to play, I'm more into FPSs but I may have long periods of time spent away from home on training course so might make use of some other types of game too.

I've got HL which I'm going to install, along with all of its add-ons.

I've also got HL2 on steam so will give it a go & hope it runs.

I was thinking of maybe the earlier fallouts?

Any suggestions for free/cheap games appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Rob

Re: Good games for a low-ish powered portable? Free or cheap if possible!

Games like Dungeon Siege run fine on lower spec machines. Cant go wrong with Diablo 2 & Warcraft 3 also.

Look into Arx Fatalis & Bards Tale (both available on Steam cheap)

Whats the spec on this machine you are using, give us a better idea of what it is actually capable of

Take a look at System Requirements site on the machine, should give you a better game analysis :

System Shock and System Shock 2 should run fine and probably the first Unreal too.

Take a look at the older Lucasarts games like Grim Fandango & Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, bear in mind though that they have 16 bit installers and wont install on a 64 bit OS.

System Shock 2 and also Thief 1&2 will run spot on. Once on the menu screen though you have to alt tab out the game then open task manager and set the affinity to a single core or they will crash.

Neverwinter Nights (first game and its 2 expansions) will run fine on that also.

There are also free high resolution mods for System Shock and System Shock 2 IIRC.

Re: Good games for a low-ish powered portable? Free or cheap if possible!

A few other games which are worth looking at are Max Payne and Max Payne 2 and perhaps XIII. I played Max Payne and Max Payne 2 on a Nvidia GeForce Go 440 which is slower than an X4500 it seems:

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-...o.33789.0.html

This means that Halo and Unreal 2 should also be playable too.

There are 4 Megadrive packs available on Steam for £5.50 each which have a fair few games in each, ideal if you have a controller to plug into the machine.

Re: Good games for a low-ish powered portable? Free or cheap if possible!

I got rid of tons of old PC games years ago, including Unreal & all the classics around that time. Wished I hadn't now!

Hmm..I had Max Payne 1/2 somewhere but can't find them, oh well!
Was going to try FarCry but it doesn't have an optical drive 7 I dont fancy copying 4GB from DVD to USB to PC then installing it!

    Reckon Oblivion would run?

I started but never finished Grim Fandango, was never into that or Monkey Island etc...maybe I should learn to be! How do you get around the install? Just run in compatability mode?

You can get a Grim Fandango installer for the 64 bit versions of Windows :

    http://code.google.com/p/grimfandangosetupandlauncher/

You will also need to grab the Grim Fandango patch or it crashes near the start on newer Operating Systems. Easy enough to find and grab from usual places.

Dont forget that you can put certain retail keys into Steam and download the game from Steam if you dont have a drive for it. :

    https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...7480-wusf-3601

I dont think you would have to much luck running Oblivion. Probably Morrowind with it being quite a few years old now though. Could also try Gothic 1 & 2, big games and complete freedom gameplay, pretty old games now so shouldnt have any major probs. Once again get them pretty cheap on Steam (Gothic 2 is £9 but for some bizarre reason Gothic 1 is £20 !! )
