    Multiplayer Ranking Systems

Generally i think they are pants. It annoys me when you get a new game, jump on the multiplayer only to find your weapons are absolute turd and you have to endure through 5-6 hours worth of hardcore sessions to get the good stuff.

They claim it gives a game longevity but honestly, i dont think it does at all. I still play COD2, that has no ranking system and the reason i play it so much is because the whole thing is just really well balanced. The thing which has given that longevity on a basic level is its tough and challangeing, not so you can have a daft number next to your name and wield dual automatic sniper shottys with grenade launcher attachments and silencers. The other feature which has helped it is the ability to create mods and maps, something which is gradually fading away in modern games it seems.

    What do you guys think?

    Re: Multiplayer Ranking Systems

I agree that CoD2 is a fantastic game, and I think it's a far better game online than any of its successors.

However, my favourite online game of all time is Battlefield 2 and that had an unlock system so I'd be lying if I said I hated them. However, with BF2 the unlockable guns weren't necessarily better than the normal ones... in fact many of the "pro" players continued using the normal guns, and still wiped the floor with the rest of the unlock using, trigger happy idiots. Also, it was very simple. 10 unlockable guns, 2 for each kit. Each kit therefore had the choice of 3 weapons.

No perks, no camouflage, no add-ons, no grenade extras, just a simple choice of 3 weapons. And to get all 10 unlocks would take well over a thousand hours I suspect (I never managed it), so hardly anybody had all 10, and you certainly didn't expect it.

The ranking in BF BC2 is appalling. You unlock everything by about level 20 and then you have to grind through over 100,000 points for every level up which will take eternity!

    Re: Multiplayer Ranking Systems

When I play multiplayer I only have one speed, one gear. Go! I win here, I win there.

Rankings that gain you nothing such as those in BC2 are just pointless. I've lost count of how many "ranks" I've gained where I've had no reward. Apart from knowing I've sunk even more time into it that is.

My problem however is I feel there's no skill required to gain anything from those systems; just time commitment.

    Re: Multiplayer Ranking Systems

    Agree with Snootyjim.

The rankings in COD, BF2142 and later games came with an unlock system that seriously penalised less hardcore gamers. All of the good stuff is unlocked late down the line.

BF2 had it right, all of the guns seemed as good as each other. I had all the guns, and would vary, depending on how I felt, but none seemed overpowered. (Wasn't brilliant with any of them)

    Re: Multiplayer Ranking Systems

The thing is, now that i am quite far through BF BC2 i now have nothing more to unlock, but i cant stop playing it. Im actually using the first assault gun you get more than anything else as it has a brilliant iron sight. I'll admit it's bloody useless without magnum ammo.

If they just released that game with everything unlocked i think people would have still appreciated it for its merits as a great multiplayer, the same goes for a lot of other games i reckon.

Whilst I see your point about BF2, what you are basically saying is that its an irrelevant ranking system... so why bother? All the really great addictive games with true multiplayer longevity had a basic load out and relied on gamplay balance and well thought out maps to keep people hooked. I really hope there is a game developert out there who realizes this and brings something out to blow us old skool gamers away!

    Re: Multiplayer Ranking Systems

I found that I continued to play BF2 as it was fun and balanced, i.e. there were no uber guns. I think that the rank/stats were a nice little addition, another hook as it were, to keep interest high. The game play allowed you to have fun, and the ranks/stats gave you something to aim for.

The problem I have with giving the good stuff to the higher ranks, is that unless you join near launch, or plough loads of hours in quickly, you are horribly out gunned. As I can't put lots of hours in consistently, if I don't buy a COD style game at the outset, I will not have fun while playing until I unlock some stuff. If I am not having fun, then I probably won't continue, regardless as to the rank/stats hook.

Although I placed BC2 in this earlier, I have found myself coming back to it.

It's as Teamsreth put it, nice to have the choice.

And also, because it was so expansive you never felt compelled to complete it. To fully max out all of the awards and things was ridiculous, i.e. hundreds of hours in each type of vehicle to get its award - but I certainly felt very proud when I got one of them.

In CoD and so on it's just such a constant stream that I didn't care. It felt as though without being level 55 you were accepting mediocrity in terms of kit and perks, and were severely disadvantaged, and there was no pride involved because they were all pretty easy to get. It was just a case of whether you could be bothered to play the game for a few weeks straight.

I get where you're coming from, but I don't think that it was good because it was irrelevant - I very much enjoyed having the system there. Your achievements and unlocks were definitely a badge of honour, but not a marker of ability.

    Re: Multiplayer Ranking Systems

I've yet to play a game where this was a benefit. If anything all it does is exclude the MP content for most with the exception of the people that live on the game. CoD being a prime example. No point playing a MP game in that as you would have to put up with weeks of getting your back side handed to you before you could compete, that's just not fun.

Best FPS online i played was and still is the various versions of Red Orchestra, weapon load outs were limited, with the majority of people requiring to have bolt action rifle. There was also none of this shooting people 5 times for them to shoot you once and you die

perhaps they should make a game that just tells you that you have finished it when you first load it up, i think it would sell well to the instant gratification youth of today.

That's exactly it though. If you want to learn all the maps and become a pro, then fine. 24 hours is not a problem.

Personally, I've never played any CoD game for long enough to learn a map before the next one comes out, CoD2 excluded. So never actually being able to use any of the kit (that I've effectively paid for when I bought the game) is a bit frustrating.
