Angry Far Cry crashing to desktop

Just 'finished' the buker level (I think) at the point where the girlie is being bundled into the helicopter...
As soon as the focus goes from Jack back to the helicopter.... bang - out she goes to the desktop.
Have deleted the game save file, turned graphics all down to low, ensured nothing else is running - and still the same.
    Its getting VERY frustrating now
Any ideas before I put this up for sale?

    Are you overclocking anything?

Conversely, have you tried underclocking at all?

Far Cry has shown a lot of people that their system isn't as stable as they thought when overclocking them, and highlights the borderline non-clocked ones - it puts a lot of stress on a PC

Also, have you applied the 1.1 patch?
Actually, I'm not sure if the 1.2 patch is due out shortly too... not checked the Ubisoft forums since I finished the game.

    N-Force 2
    XP2500 Barton
    512 Ram
    GeForce 4 - Ti4200
    Enermax 550W PSU
Temps - dunno, not monitoring atm - but its been running LifeMapper 24/7 for the last few months without a problem (though this is switched off when gaming)
Display Drivers are NVidia - 56.72
    W2K latest SP

FarCry patch 1.1 - though it also did it on the original install

Was overclocked now running bog std boring (happens on both though)

This has only happend at the 'transition' video clip stage, the rest of the game has been running fine up until now - and its always as the focus goes from Helicopter - Jack - back to helicopter, then hello desktop.
Interestingly enough, its does appear to completley fubar the gamma on the card when it does it though

Yeah this game puts a lot of pressure on any system. I have seen it using something like 870MB memory and as Paul said it does turn up any instabilities in the system. (As an aside I dont know how this game would possibly run on the minimum requirements of 1GHZ CPU, 256MB RAM )

I had problems with the game locking up (requiring reset) when I was running faster memory timings (probably mobo limitations rather than RAM).

The problem you are describing sounds exactly like a problem that I had with Half Life. I later found that i had seriously dodgy memory which was probably the cause. The game would crash out to desktop at certain map loads and would absolutely refuse to go past that point. I managed to get around this a few times by going back a few save games and going another way around but that does not seem an option in Far Cry.

You could try a cheat to get to the next level but I would advise trying memtest just to be sure

I usually find CTD's are caused by sound not grafix, just enable the lowest sound settings and get rid of any hardware settins like EAX also in control panel reduce the sound accelarator to minimum. Its solved my problems 90% od the time. Also 'trilinear' causes alot of problems set the grafix down to 'bilinear' this solved alot of peoples problems.

Yup, I think I experienced in 3 times throughout the game, it would just exit in a flash to desktop. No error reports, just straight to desktop. Nothing was o/c...

Although, it is a high demanding game and once my pc got 79oC and crashed. Damn Far cry.

This is making me mad now.......
Only thing left is to run MemTest.
Have tried with the most BORING settings ever - still the same, old drivers - still the same, sound off - still the same, deleting save files - still the same.
May try a BIOS update later..... in the hope that its not - still the same
Even done a couple of DeFrags just to make sure....
Failing that may have to see if anyone has got a save file from the next level - as I can now count down to the second when the crash is going to occur

Try memtest before anything drastic like bios update etc m8. It only takes a few minutes and doesnt cost you anything (apart from a blank floppy). You can get it here if you dont have it already.

Even if it doesnt turn up anything you have piece of mind on that front

P.s. cant you get a cheat code to load you into the next level?

    Ran MemTest and.......
    Its found 2 bad 'segments' @ 00011099958 and 00012099938
Not sure what that means (well apart from its not working correctly!) and cant afford more memory ATM either.
Off to find a cheat to get me to the next level....

If you're overclocking the RAM (including using lower timings) try putting it back to stock settings (or increase the timings / voltage)... TBH though if Memtest is repeatedly finding the same errors (in the same locations that is) it's probably the RAM that's knackered

Ram is at Std speeds, Memtest ran around 10 times and found the same 2 errors @ 272.5mb and 288.5mb. Am going to attempt to reseat/reclean everything over the weekend. Failing that I believe Corsair have a good returns policy - so just need to find the receipt now.....

If anyone has the first save file for the next level after the bunker, it would be err apprecitated

    Cheers
