EA Origin? Good move or bad?

so ea pulled crysis 2 off of the steam servers as its launching its new competitive online gaming client.
i think this was a very bad move, theyre making enemies. mabye if they said something like' hey when you buy battlefield 3 youll have to log in to this new client' but not a game thats already out.

post your thoughts on this new service or what you think of ea.

is a good discussion on it. As long as it doesn't lead to fragmentation of the download market. Imagine 10+ download managers going around from every major publisher ... no thanks. Steam is awesome because virtually everything is on it, it has amazing sales and good social groups/forums. I only buy dd from steam or gog, if not available then I buy it retail. I suspect quite a few people are similar.

Re: EA Origin? Good move or bad?

    DO NOT WANT!

I like Steam, I have all my mates on there and I have most of my games on there and the ones i don't I usually add to the steam library so I don't have to go hunting for the icon or whatever.

I think its a bad move as far as the PC gaming platform is concerned, who knows if its a good or bad move as far as EA are concerned. Could end up embarrassing if the service fails to catch on and frankly I would be surprised if they can get the functionality as right as steam has. After all, Steam has been around a long time and seen continuous updates over the years, be a big ask to build all that from the ground up.

Re: EA Origin? Good move or bad?

every game patch is held back for days if not weeks due to the ijiots who package the updates/games at steam and break a client that works perfectly well until they shoehorn there crap into the files

i know this as i work with the EA devs for many top multiplayer titles inc BC2, Crysis 2 for the server hosting and have fully working game and server patches ready to go but yet again find we have to wait for steam!

I already use EADM and it works fine, so if they want to change the name and improve it I'm happy with that.

Re: EA Origin? Good move or bad?

I get why people hate Origin, but it works fine. And the core features are exactly the same as Steam. Sure it's not developed as much as Steam is or as cool as Steam.

I personally think it's a bad idea, Steam is the way forward. Not multiple clients for the download distribution platform.

EA is just trying to get into the act, but it's too late.

Steam is the way forward, just like MS controls computers with Windows and iTunes does with music, Steam controls online distribution.

I don't want to mix up my games everywhere.

Re: EA Origin? Good move or bad?

Long term it cant be a bad thing as it should make for some healthy competition between digital distributors, may actually start to bring prices down. There is no way that a boxed new release should be cheaper from a store than it is online from digital download client. Hopefully this will start to rectify things and bring pricing in check.

As it stands I am perfectly happy with Steam, if Origins does take off I will take a look and weigh up the pros and cons. No doubt The Old Republic and BF3 will be on there primarily, should also imagine they will do day one DLC as an exclusive to Origins. I have read ToR will bypass Origins and be connected directly with Bioware, so it seems that its just going to be like Steam with an overlay for all the social stuff.

I think it will take off regardless, 2 huge titles landing on PC from EA this year will be good for EA and Origins, not forgetting the massive back catalogue of EA games. Half Life 2 came with Steam which I wasnt to chuffed about initially, but grown to like it and now have loads of stuff on there. Look where Steam is now, its huge, I think the same will go for this after it has been around a little while.

Steam came about when digital download was in its infancy and basically established itself as the major player in the market. There are plenty of others now, I doubt EA is looking to set itself up as a competitor to Steam, they simply want to sell their own games digitally without playing a 30% cut to Steam. EA's timing is suspiciously stupid also, the steam sales are coming soon in which they rake in more the GDP of Ecuador, I know lots of people that splurge out at this time and only this time, Crysis 2 would have been a big seller on the steam sales but unfortunately not now :/

It's good for EA's bottom line but not good for consumers. I have accounts with Steam, gog, and d2d. If every major publisher starts trying to sell their products exclusively on a separate downloaded manager then bugger that, I will buy retail. As long as steam continues being a benevolent dictator they I have no qualms with them, it's an excellent service.

Re: EA Origin? Good move or bad?

As I found when I played DarkSpore, EA forced the install of the Download client even though the game was on a DVD you could infact just have used the licence code and downloaded all of it the only advantage of the DVD install is you could select the install location and it saves a little time, box contained a dvd box sized single piece of paper and a DVD, atleast with The Witcher 2, you feel like you have bought something... I have a cursed coin now. Games are becoming bonded to accounts even if you buy them in a shop, your "profile" is stored in the cloud that means you can never repeat the game and you can't sell it. For something like 35 quid is to much to pay, for a tenner or less I am will to accept such limitations.
