Mafia 2: the sheer joy of it :-)

Well, courtesy of my mate Ferral, who already owned it and then bought a new graphics card with Mafia2 on Steam for free.... I've been playing it.

It's got music to die for, atmosphere like very few games and a story line that just works like a book.

Guns, basic fighting, driving, a good sized city... stealth levels... it's very very exciting.

And it really does look very lovely.

So... if you've got a hankering for a semi stealthy, medium paced adventure, with a little bit of everything... questing.... fighting.... shooting..... and wandering about.. this game from quite a while ago, if you missed it as I did... is worthy.

It has a few minor foibles... like the time you lose to the real world... but these are minor...

6 hours in, a few good tasks under my belt, a prison sentence... and frankly a quite tense set of FMV intro's to the situations, makes it waaaay worthy of a place in your game library.

    First 3 hours.... 7 /10 and a few 8/10 moments...

next 6 hours.... 8/10 all the way.

Quite in love with it tbh. Only played demo instances of it before and they were wasted. You need story, background and character for this game... and from the first scene it drew me in.

Do it... don't miss out now it's older

(machine is a Q6700 at 2.9, with 4 gig and a GTX 275 and it sruns on a 22" at 1680x1050 in sublime lovelynes... so don't feel like you need a behemoth of a machine in 2011)

Re: Mafia 2: the sheer joy of it :-)

oh.. as a side line.. this game has a few moments that are closest to Thief 2 and 3 that I've ever experienced. Levels based on proper creeping around, torch light, shadows... stealth....

v clever to the contrary side of boxing and shooting sections.

Wonderful game (you seem to reveal a few spoilers there ) the story is rather good and the ending is simple but quite fitting.

The attention for detail is evident and very pleasing, they had no problem designing new content for a particular scene or room. Perhaps for that reason the game is somehow short; main story aside I also found little else to do in the wonderfully designed city.

Overall short but sweet (need to check the DLC) and definitely a must now that the price has gone down.

Re: Mafia 2: the sheer joy of it :-)

Love the Mafia games. Closest thing to them is the GTA series, thing is with Mafia though is the ambience of the period it is played out in. The story that unfolds draws you in and you feel for the characters when various things are happening.

Who could ever forget the closing moments of the first game with Paulie in the museum, then the bit that really gets you after the final credits roll. Not forgetting the scene at the airport with Frank the accountant, the whole thing is crafted to perfection.

I feel that Mafia 2 is equally good but the differences between right and wrong tread a fine line that is very blurred. The main character has depth as does his companion, but you cant help but feel that this other guy is leading things in a bad way. Narration is absolutely fantastic and the setting is something of true beauty. I love just driving about at the start of the game when its snowing, makes you think of times gone by.

Re: Mafia 2: the sheer joy of it :-)

I personally found it amazing for the first few hours (love the snow at the start), then painfully boring for the last half of the game interjected with some moments of greatness, but then that's just me. If I had enjoyed the driving parts and didn't consider them as padding between missions it would certainly have helped my enjoyment.

I don't think it's a particularly great game, but it certainly has a better atmosphere and aura than anything else I've played.

Problem is your nearly at the end of the game now and you won't even see it coming lol. Fantastic game just felt like it could of been so much more.

Mafia 2 for me was awful!!! Found it very boring with nothing to keep me interested. The first Mafia game........now that was a good game, it was everything Mafia 2 was not!!

Mafia 2 is probably my favorite game of last year, really enjoyed playing it, and have played it at least 4 or 5 times. Really is a kick in the head and I hope there's a Mafia 3 at some point

Re: Mafia 2: the sheer joy of it :-)

I have just finished it, loved every moment. I didnt like the ending though as it is wide open in so many ways even though the realisation for Joe is the worst case scenario.

It also smacked me in the face the cutscene in Chapter 14 with the red car. Tied in nicely to the first game but why did it have to be Vito & Joe.

Re: Mafia 2: the sheer joy of it :-)

i thought this was a very bland game with nothing interesting in it (never did complete it) perhaps i was expecting it to be to much like the original. the only thing i found that i could compare between the 2 games was the very linear levels!

I'd forgotten I picked this game up on Steam when it was on sale, thanks for the reminder Zak

Been playing this over the weekend and the game really makes my SLI GTX-460 rig cook (first time both GPUs have been upwards of 70 degrees) but oooohhhhh my, does it look nice in DX11.

I wonder if the coming Crysis 2 DX11 patch will put more stress on the cards too, as LOTRO doesn't (even after running for hours)...

Re: Mafia 2: the sheer joy of it :-)

For anyone that hasnt played the first game in the series, make sure you watch the ending on Youtube, theres a bit at the end of the credits also that you need to watch as it ties in with Mafia 2, the old guy that is in the scene at the end of the credits is your character Tommy from the first game. He got out the Mafia by selling his story to the Police and the Salieri family wernt top happy about it.

Do this before you reach Chapter 13 so you know what is going on in one of the cutscenes in Mafia 2
