So many games... So little time...
And so it begins again!!!! Just after payday too I mean
*Shame* it requires Steam? Sure, it is a form of DRM, but it's DRM done right. Steam adds value imho - it keeps my games all in one place and organized, I have easy access to my games on as many PCs as I like, no need to worry about losing discs/cd keys, the community features are great for finding people into similar games and therefore people to play with/against and frequent wallet pillaging sales.
There is the downside that Valve could potentially lock your account on a whim if they wanted (but it wouldn't happen for no reason, the media outfall would be immense), or they could go bust, but many games now have activation servers etc and could suffer the same fate. On the console side people and consoles have been banned, it's not a problem just limited to Steam.
Basically DRM is unfortunately going nowhere fast, Steam is one of the least intrusive forms and has lots of added value. What's not to like?
Got myself a copy of witcher 2 (just completed the first so this sale was perfect timing).
Did anyone notice they jacked the price up for tdu 2. it was originally £4.99 at the start if the sale and now it is £7.49???
And also brink is now back on sale (it was removed from the store shortly after its release in the uk).
I was waiting for it to come down in price in steam, but when I heard about there being a bug so that to patch the game meant you had to download the entire 9GB again, then I got it direct from good old games, which is fully DRM free too. I know that they are looking into the problem though. Great game btw.
I bought the Valve Complete Pack! Mainly because I wanted Portal 2, and the L4D's...and there is plenty more in there to keep me busy for a long time...
I'll bore others round here if I go through my objections yet again. A search on my name and "Steam" would probably bring up previous discussions on this. But just for a taste ....
- if Steam goes bust (and in these times, who knows), you lose access to all the games you've paid for, unless they release unlocked versions, and if they go bust, they won't be there to do it.
- my games PCs do not have an internet connection. Please advise how I can use Steam, and activate games, even if I wanted to, which I don't.
There are several other reasons, but that's two things not to like. I know lots of people like the way it operates, and have reasons for them that, like you, are strong advantages. But for me, it's a non-starter. I want a boxed game that I can use on my own, without having to get it authorised by some overseas company.
No internets on the games pc?
I like Steam for certain games...mainly small, popular, older games.
Any big releases I would back my money on the disc version!
Of, currently, 11 PCs here, two have net connections, one of those being my laptop. The others don't need it, and are far more secure without it. Some are in a test configuration, some are doing primarily a specific task, and are more or less dedicated to that, and some are general purpose. My gaming is done on the general purpose ones.
