    3rd person shooters...

I feel I have to be missing a load of them.....it's not a genre I have ever really played until recently but I am now pretty much hooked on them....I think trying them in the front room with an XBox 360 pad and a large plasma was the key

Recently played right through the following:

    Red Faction: Guerilla
    Red Faction: Armageddon
    Gears of War
    Resident Evil 5
    Just Cause 2
Hunted the Demons Forge (it's certainly a shooter when you play as the elf!)

Wondering what else is out there.....GoW and RF:A were by far the best of the bunch......completed both of them in a couple of sittings (could not put them down!), so anything in that vein would be nice.

Tried Saints Row 2 and hated it though.....way too GTA for my liking.

If you like that sort of thing dead space was okay. it tries a little too hard to be horror but forget about suspense. but its an okay game worth a shot anyway I think.

    Re: 3rd person shooters...

Mass Effect 2 - definitely more a shooter than an RPG, good game all round.
Fallout 3 (ish) - more of an RPG, but good 3rd person shooter as well.

Definitely give Dead Space a bash. Probably better games about but Vanquish, Dark Sector, Splinter Cell Conviction, and Lost Planet were all pretty enjoyable.

    Re: 3rd person shooters...

Enslaved is a decent game, not so much shooter but it does have a shoot element with your staff, damned good underated game. Also Dead Rising, Lost Planet 1 & 2, Rogue Trooper (love the 2000AD stuff, dont see it often though even though there are loads of worlds out there in the mag they could make games out of). I've been playing Shadows of the Damned the past few days, thats a really good game.

Theres so many out there similar to Gears!!

Obvious choice being GOW2, excellent sequel.

    Dead Space 1+2
    Mass Effect 1+2
    Mafia 2
Army Of Two + 40th Day, the first is better then the second especially when played co-op.
Max Payne 1+2 if you don't mind dated gfx

Can't think of any more of the top of my head lol

I disagree. An old school game like Doom would be slaughtered in today's market. See the reviews for Duke Nukem for proof. Games have moved on and are far more creative.

    In what way ?

    techonolgy ?

Lot of older games had far better playability because they didnt have graphics to win folk over with like they do now.

pacman , tetris are good example of great playbility that stand the test of time.

DOOM 3 was along with Dukem where groundbreakers back in the day , that is why they were big, they wouldnt be big today because theirs been almsot 2 decades worth of neverending clones of them .

    MOH
    Resident Evil
    etc etc

They are just different takes on the same basic 3rd person shoot em up ,even right back to games like operation wolf in the arcades with more of an rpg element thrown in , but still the same thing.

Its not like the world themselves are any more unpredictable or less scriped - hence the grinding issues with so many mmorpgs and lastability of playing a game that can only be played 1 x2 based on the story ( unless your into scores, secrets etc )

Just a note, The developer/publisher Rebellion bought 2000AD a while back, so they could have exclusive rights to using that material for games.

However a lot of the older stuff is joint copy right, esp late 80's to early 90's, between both 2000ad/(who ever owned it at the time) and the original creators (artist/writer) so you cannot do anything with permission from all parties.
I think there would be great potential in something like Zenith but there's no way it would ever happen.

    Re: 3rd person shooters...

dead space 1 and 2 are great, the second is much better, they're jumpy but like a previous poster said, it lacks the suspense of true horror, probably why more people played it...

max payne and hitman blood money are great 3rd person games but i think you will need xpadder if you want to play with a joypad.

but people are playing these sorts of games on ipads now - no ?

It funny how acceptable something becomes if it makes sense ie. expectations are lowered due to technology like on i phones limitations etc compared to pc.

The focus is on the graphics , graphics all the time even the developers are sick of basically remaking the same formula of game for trigger / MOH junkies
