    Terraria, anyone?

Did a forum thread search for this. Surprised no one else has started one. Anyone else playing Terraria? I was gifted a copy by a guy at work, and it's awesome.

Though I find it rather disturbing that my first impulse, on whatever size of world, is to dig straight down as far as I can, then dig right and left from the middle of that vertical tunnel, to the edge of the map, (or until the library gets in the way) "for ease of navigation". Or that's what I tell myself.

Great fun. Also enjoy draining the ocean into the underworld

Seriously... some other Hexus peeps have to be hooked, surely?

    Re: Terraria, anyone?

Bought it on the Steam summer sale, played it for like 15 mins and thought "jeez, what a poor rip off of Minecraft, almost identical but only 2D" and started up Minecraft again.

    Half serious

Had heard of it in passing. Never looked at it. Brother in law mentioned it, but he was a huge Warcraft fan so I assumed it was similar.

    Re: Terraria, anyone?

I personally don't think the two games are comparable... Terreria is marketed to be like minecraft but really it's more 2d rpg platformer which happens to let you mine and build stuff (in 2d, o yay). But it's a bit limited. Great if you can't be bothered to build anything, just kill mobs and level up a laser Gatling gun... Minecraft has a lot more scope, and way more potential. I recently seen a tube vid of a giant red stone monopoly board, with a randomiser dice system and all. Bloody amazing, and not event remotely possible on terreria. Then again terreria has a awesome revamped commander keen/duke nukem feel to it.

    Re: Terraria, anyone?

I played it on my brother's steam account the other day and I actually had a lot of fun. I thought it was going to be a sort of rip-off of minecraft but it's actually really good and for the price, i'm definately picking it up

I've never played Minecraft, it looks a tad boring but so many of my mates play it so there must be something to it.

    Re: Terraria, anyone?

I've played 43hrs since I purchased it from the Steam sale. I've never played Minecraft & purchased this after reading a comment that it has more content/variety than Minecraft.

Like you, Shooty, I just kept digging down till I came across lava. Less tiles needed to be removed going down than sideways. Amazing gameplay value for such a small game at an awesome price.

    Re: Terraria, anyone?

Good on you, Art. I now have a large world, and am digging
    1. Straight down in middle.
    2. Across to left and right boundaries at "ground" level.
    3. Across to left and right boundaries at midway point
    4. Across to left and right just above underworld
    5. Straight down at boundaries

to get a grid thing going. And, obv, I've build a massive castle. And a beach. Because I can.

    Re: Terraria, anyone?

Pretty much done everything in multiplayer with my son.

Really good when you know what you're doing. The game is geared towards powering up to face the next boss in order to open new areas and get better loot.

The comparisons to Minecraft are amusing. Imo they're very different. The joy of Terraria is that after grafting for gear and getting prepared everyone can beat the wall of flesh. You get licked by the destroyer; hard graft and revision of tactics make the victory more satisfying the fourth time around.

Update 1.3 is coming up in June. 1 or 2 new events, mounts, interface update to name a few. They said they'll keep releasing new content.

    Re: Terraria, anyone?

I was quite reluctant to play Terraria after being gifted it (although would've had to play it at some point ><) as I'm not very fond of Minecraft. In other words, I, like most people, believe its basically a 2D Minecraft, which in a way is but it's just...better!
So I've put quite a lot of hours in Terraria now. I see quite a lot of people venturing into multiplayer worlds, but I feel as though single-player is good enough! ^^

It's a great game, and the huge free updates they release from time to time really change up the game.
