Mouse Mat - Hard or Cloth?

    Hi guys,

I'm looking at buying a Logitech G500 and a surface to use it on. I have been looking at SteelSeries, primarily the Qck which is a cloth mat.

However, I read in the FAQ that...
For optimal performance we recommend the HD Series (9HD, 4HD, 3HD), which were specifically designed for Laser mouse.
These are hard mats, and are more expensive (surprise, surprise!). I prefer the feel and weight of the cloth, but apparently a hard surface makes for better tracking with a laser. From that series, I would get the 9HD if necessary.

I'm not awfully bothered, but I'd like to know if it makes much of a difference.

    Thanks.

Re: Mouse Mat - Hard or Cloth?

I've had a Razer exact mat for the last few years and I've got to say I'm very happy I moved to a hard mat. I guess it's more of a personal preference than a performance thing though.

Why not get the mouse and see how it performs on your current mat before splashing out on a new mat too?

Re: Mouse Mat - Hard or Cloth?

Apparently, the G500 doesn't track very well on the SS Qck. Negative acceleration issues...

So it looks like the G500 + 9HD or the G400 + Qck.

Re: Mouse Mat - Hard or Cloth?

I went through a mouse mat craze earlier this year (I think i bought 5 or 6 different mats including the sphex, vespula and Razer Goliathus ) before i found one i liked

Hard mats definitely feel and track better than cloth mats and I would highly recommend getting a hard one over a soft one if your into fps games.

I like the speed mats best (i play a lot of fps games) and the speed cloth mats i used still had quite a bit of friction/resistance. The sphex was quite good but felt more like a control mat rather than a speed matt and its not great if you have a wood desk (you can feel the wood grain through it and the adhesive will pull varnish of the desk).

The best performing speed surface i found was the razer exactmat. I really liked this mat (and used it for years before it became worn out) but every bit of dust/dirt seemed to bring the mouse to a grinding halt and i forever seemed to be cleaning the mouse feet and mat.

The razer vespula is noticeably not quite as good as the exactmat but it is much more forgiving with dirt/dust than the exactmat. It doesnt seem to be as durable as the exactmat either (ive already got a worn patch at the center and its only around 10 months old) and it is quite a bit smaller than the exactmat.

I havent tried out the ironclad or scarab yet or any of the newer razer mats.

I do play a fair share of FPS. But I'm also very much into my RPGs and I'm looking at getting Guild Wars 2, but I don't really want an MMO mouse (e.g., Razer Naga, SS WoW mouse).

A wooden chopping board with rubber feat to stop it sliding around is my favourite mouse mat... Otherwise I used to use a Steel Series MM when I was seriously in to PC Gaming.

There's an old post on the ebuyer forums detailing how to make a cheap, non-stick, non-slip mousemat. Linky.

Teflon coating coupled with teflon mouse feet (or whatever the feet on gaming mice are made of) - you don't get much more non-stick than that!

Re: Mouse Mat - Hard or Cloth?

That's one of the major selling points of laser mice, that they don't need a mouse mat and should work well on almost any smooth hard surface (glass being one of the few they don't work well on due to refraction)

So I'm with noodles_husky here, desk surface just keep it clean.

I use the top of my case - see specs.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

I did that for a while. Ended up having to replace the desk due wearing its surface out. I find a mouse mat is much cheaper in the long run
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

0iD: Plus weeing in it every now & again does it good
scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.

Re: Mouse Mat - Hard or Cloth?

I use a padded soft one cos after 4 or 5 hours (in my CoD W@W days) a hard one kills my wrist joint.

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/razer...-x-215mm-x-4mm

had it years now.. still like brand new. I wash it every 6 months wit warm soapy water and dry it in the airing cupboard.

Re: Mouse Mat - Hard or Cloth?

I'd always go for a hard one (that's what she said... ba dum tish) since in my experience it gives you smoother more accurate movement. But that said, I'm currently using my leg as a mouse mat, fine for browsing the web, not so good for gaming!
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

Yup, even though that's one downside to using my desk, its better than having my mouse on the metal desk thingy.
