    Had enough of PCs

I've been a stalwart PC fan for about a decade now, but I'm really getting to the end of my thether. Fancied a nice gaming session tonight after a hard 12hr shift yesterday, went to turn on my rig and it booted as far as the Windows 7 splash screen, then hung. Restarted, and it went to a DOS error message saying boot info was wrong, F1 to edit settings. I did so, loaded my previous BIOS settings from the Asus ezOC profiles and restarted. This time it booted to Windows and was on the home screen when it hung. I left it for a few minutes and there was no change. I noticed that my keyboard was not illuminated. This time I restarted and the computer powered up, but no input on the monitor. I reset the CMOS which didn't work.

6 months ago I spent hours trying to fix all the windows computers in my household after a trojan got in through my fiancee's laptop. At that point I was wondering if it was worth it. I used to game on my PC and generally use it much more, but now I live with my partner and we got engaged, and working full time, life etc. I just don't get to use it much. I've also got an xBox 360 and though I don't like it as much as PC gaming it is just more convenient without all the crap that seems to come with PCs.

I feel like I don't have the time, or perhaps the skill and inclination to fix it this time, which is pretty depressing.

Sorry about the rant, I just felt like you guys would understand where most people I know wouldn't.

    Re: Had enough of PCs

I would say I spend more time on my 360 these days than on the PC, recent games have been so buggy its not been worth the effort on the PC.

Consoles aren't much better. Certainly the PS3 is plagued by perpetual firmware and game updates, some more unpleasant than not, which takes much more time than one would like to just play a game. Technology in general is degenerating into a steaming pile.

I have never really played games on my pc the odd championship manager when it first came out. I see my PC as a works unit (I do a lot of work from home) and I see my xbox 360 as my guilty pleasure.

    I have to agree.

When I want to play a game on my PC, it is on Steam, patched up and ready to go. If I want to play a game on the PS3 though, about 50% of the time I'm missing a patch, and it won't even permit me to start the game without downloading the patch. About 10% of the time I'm missing a firmware update, which has exactly the same result. I end up waiting about 20 minutes to actually play the damn thing.

    I wouldn't.

    I have all three options - PC/PS3/360.

Without a doubt the 360 is the simplest option to pick up and play. Turn on, if theres an update it gives me a choice (if I don't want to play on Live I can download it later) and downloads it quickly.

PS3 I don't play on as much, and I'd agree about the patches & system updates - though I've always assumed it was because I don't use it frequently enough.

PC - Steam makes it nice and easy, but not every game loads through Steam. Oh, and buying the disc and then downloading it through steam anyway? Nice.

    Re: Had enough of PCs

Buy a pre-built PC from a retailer so that you have exactly the same recourse of action should it go wrong.

    If you self-build, you self-diagnose.

I for one will resist the console march as much as possible........it's starting to look futile but there are still very few titles that are console exclusive....and then they are exclusive to one or the other.
    Main PC: Asus Rampage IV Extreme / 3960X@4.5GHz / Antec H1200 Pro / 32GB DDR3-1866 Quad Channel / Sapphire Fury X / Areca 1680 / 850W EVGA SuperNOVA Gold 2 / Corsair 600T / 2x Dell 3007 / 4 x 250GB SSD + 2 x 80GB SSD / 4 x 1TB HDD (RAID 10) / Windows 10 Pro, Yosemite & Ubuntu

You're probably right - I don't use it that frequently either, but that's not really a valid excuse for the PS3 in my book. Why can't I play *without* patching? I never play online, I really don't care. If there's a patch 1.31 from my current 1.3, then fine, it'll be nice to have it in a while. But either download it at night, or when the console is on standby, and let me play as normal until the patch is ready... at a time of my convenience.

As I understand it, automatic patching is a feature available in Playstation Plus, which is just an insult to everybody else. That should be a standard feature, not a paid-for bonus.

As for the latter issue, I only buy games that are Steam compatible now. Cuts down on my choice? Sure. Frustrating at times? Sure. But in the long term, it makes my life far simpler and far easier, so I'll carry on doing it that way. Nothing would tempt me to go back to the black days of installing multi-disc games, hitting up filefront for 3 different patches, installing them in the wrong order and getting a game that won't start, and so on.

    Re: Had enough of PCs

I never had a console as a kid, so it's still a bit foreign to me really. I was always much more comfortable with a mouse and keyboard, especially since I am a fan of strategy games which do not translate well to console. I hope when I get home I can fix the PC, but I'm still pretty tempted to break it down and sell up

    Re: Had enough of PCs

I know where the OP is coming from. I got sick of sorting out PC glitches. I felt I was spending more time sorting problems out with my machine than actually using it to do things. In fact I got so sick of it that I now do all my gaming on consoles and all my computing on Macs. Bliss!

However I do agree that the PS3 updates are a royal pain in the posterior. I want to play a game not spend half an hour downloading an update from Sony's super slow servers...

Completely in agreement with Dave87 on this one. Have all 3 systems and Xbox gets the most love. Kinda wishing I had gotten Borderlands on it now, love the game but have only a few friends on PS3 and none with it.

Dont lose faith tho Million, anything is frustrating when you are looking forward to it and it just doesnt work right when you need it to. Part of my love for pc's is learning about them as you fix them.

    Re: Had enough of PCs

I have all 3 systems, but play PC 99% of the time.

PS3 is a PoS with the constant updating and **** (haven't touched it since the whole Sony hack thing a few mnths back), that i only got so I could play my PS1 + 2 games

XBOX 360: I have to say it is a great system, but I don't use it often (mostly for GH when drunk... don't know why but I play better drunk/stoned... musta been in a rock band in a previous life)

PC: Sure its got its problems, but if something breaks on it, you just need to replace that part, not the entire sytem.

@Dave87: Its fairly simple to get around taht and install from disc, but yes, it is annoying that it dowloads automatically instead of loading from disc first then updating...

Umm why? if you're happy to play a game without patching on a ps3, why have you got to patch a pc game?

I think the biggest issue with pc games has been the need to patch in the first place, some of the bugs that get through on new releases are just unforgivable, what's worse is now that consoles access the internet and have hard drives these too are getting buggy games that need patching on release.
if you want to play online MP games then you have to have them patched to the latest version reguardless of the platform

It also depends on the games you play, MMO's just work best on a pc and get automatically patched RTS games do work best on pc and of course you can do other things on a pc.
If you want to play social/party games (eg rock band or Viva Piñata Party Animals) then a console is a much better platform.

Also not gaming on your pc isn't going to protect it from a trojan brought in from another pc/email/usb stick/etc or hardware failiers and consoles are not immune to hardware failier ether.

I'm happy to play without patching on the PS3, but only temporarily. Same situation with any platform. I will want the patch, since it's meant to be bringing stability improvements/extra features or whatever.

However, if the patch is brought out on Tuesday... well, I was happily playing on Monday without it, so why can't I play on Tuesday, quit the game, and then download the patch. Only the PS3 only tells you that you need a patch when you decide to boot up the game, and then refuses to let you play said game until it has been patched.

Yeah i can see the OP view on this. What i would say though, that when pc gaming works it's the best gaming in the world.
